'Elementary' trailer: Sherlock Holmes drama from CBS - watch video

CBS has released a trailer for Sherlock Holmes drama Elementary.

The series will be a modern-day take on Conan Doyle's detective - similar to the BBC's Sherlock.
Jonny Lee Miller will play the contemporary Holmes, who solves crime in New York, while Lucy Liu will play a female Watson.

Liu has claimed that the drama - which also stars Aidan Quinn (Prime Suspect) - will turn the Sherlock canon "on its head in a very big way".

Sherlock exec Sue Vertue previously admitted that she finds the similarities between the BBC show and Elementary "extremely worrying".

"We are very proud of our show and like any proud parent, will protect the interest and wellbeing of our offspring," said Vertue.

I read this too the other day....

Steven Moffat on 'Elementary': 'CBS have changed Sherlock too much'

Steven Moffat has criticised CBS Sherlock Holmes series Elementary.

Moffat - who co-created the BBC's Sherlock - told The Insider that the CBS update has changed too many elements from Conan Doyle's original tales.
"What we did with our Sherlock was just take it from Victorian times into modern day," he said.

"They've got three big changes: it's Sherlock Holmes in America, it's Sherlock Holmes updated and it's Sherlock Holmes with a female Watson. I wonder if he's Sherlock Holmes in any sense other than he's called Sherlock Holmes?"

Moffat confirmed that CBS opted to produce Elementary after being denied the rights to remake Sherlock, but insisted that he does not resent the network.

"I don't want it to sound like [co-creator] Mark [Gatiss] and I don't want other people to try this," he explained. "We welcome it, but don't damage the brand."

I partly agree with Moffat I don't like the idea of a woman playing Watson I actually don't like that trend of putting in females in certain establed male roles anyway nor vice versa though its done more with male roles after all I don't hear many crying out for one of Charlie's Angels to be a guy   or desperate househusbands or Sex in the City with one of the four a fella    no what we hear is a female Dr Who or female James Bond
That aside looking at the trailer reminds me slightly of House maybe because he was based after Sherlock Holmes too

It's a gamble, I loved the Moffatt version of Sherlock, he's done wonders for it and Doctor Who so I can kind of see his point but in certain respects I think changes needed making for the American viewers.

yeah i agree about American audiences and it may need changing but does that conclude to a female Watson? I don't know for some reason I could understand more a black Holmes or Watson but a female one? it just rings to me of the same old dual reasons for doing it namely  eye candy for the lads and a possible flirt/ love interest between the two friends. I just keep thinking of old 80's tv series like Remington Steele or Moonlighting for some reason    lets hope it doesn't turn into a "Will they or won't they? thing

I just hope they don't turn it into CSI.
