The Slimsons
DOH! The Department of Health have picked an unlikely icon in the battle against obesity - Homer Simpson.
Telly's beer-loving, doughnut-munching idler will get off his couch and go to work today as the new face of healthy eating. The DoH is sponsoring episodes of The Simpsons in a bid to persuade Brits to improve their diet.
Viewers will see Homer, Bart, Marge and the rest of the cartoon family on the sofa at the start of each episode.
The characters, recreated by Wallace and Gromit creators Aardman Animations, tuck into junk food before it vanishes and is replaced with nutritious fare such as fruit and vegetables.
The £640,000 ads for the Government's Change4Life health campaign start today on Channel 4 and run till Christmas Day.
Public Health Minister Gillian Merron said: "They provide a popular and engaging way to get the message to real-life families."
Professor Gerard Hastings, director of the Institute for Social Marketing at Stirling University, said: "It is good that health is associated with something irreverent and fun instead of po-faced and worthy.
"It's not what is said but who says it that matters and the fact that Homer and Bart Simpson are implicitly endorsing this message is really important.
"We all have a bit of the beer and doughnuts persona in us and, within reason, that's fine. It's about balance and moderation."
What a ridiculous waste of money and the most unlikely characters for this message in the first place
yesterday i was watching the Wright show and i was delighted to hear him give out and say that he was sick to death now of the fat and overweight being the whipping boys every two minutes...(something i have been saying this ages)...it was just good to hear others like this realise it now too

It does seem a tad cackhanded, yes- as does the official explanation behind the move! _________________ The Dark Side is a pathway to many abilities, some considered to be..unnatural. |

| I can't see how Homer Simpson will encourage people to lose weight. He'll still be eating junk food in the show and still be overweight! |

But have any of you noticed lately a slight change in the Simpsons cartoon aswell ...there seems to be more episodes now with obesity or the consequences of obesity been highlighted .........there was even an episode lately which had Homer take up walking and enjoy it and get really fit . ........I wouldn't be surprised if they are being partitioned by health crowds and government in the States _________________
