I've just finished reading Christopher Sandford's biography of Kurt Cobain, and ultimately it's a rather sad story! It would seem he had a rough childhood with music as his only real escape, then in his teens he dropped out of schooling and started dabbling in punk rock amongst other things before founding a range of small time bands, after which he initiated Nirvana.
And it's at that point things start to get interesting- the late Eighties see them making their first album 'Bleach' with Sub Pop Records before a move to Geffen, for whom they made 'Nevermind and 'In Utero'. Privately it all starts to unravel before his death in 1994 at 27, and its here that the story ends.
But amongst all the sad stuff there's a lot of insight into the drive and work ethic that made him and the band so compelling, as well as their many influences and insight into Kurt's songwriting process, so it's a real must- read for any rock fans!
