Although I got a copy of the late Nirvana frontman's journals a few Christmases ago I only really started delving into them lately. I've been a fan of the band for years, got most of their albums- 'Bleach', 'Nevermind', 'In Utero' and the 'Incesticide' and 'With The Lights Out' compilations, and it's actually quite fascinating what his writings reveal. He basically hated his parents after they divorced because of the stigma he attached to seperation, as well as not complying when his dad tried to get him into sports by practically forcing him to join his high school's wrestling team and then spend a stint playing 'little league' baseball.
There are also drafts of letters to his friends, music magazines etc as well as lists of artists/albums that influenced him and the band- there's a varied mix from Aerosmith ( the 'Rocks' album) and the Beatles ( 'Meet The Beatles') to Black Sabbath ( 'Master Of Reality) and Public Enemy ('It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back').
Amongst other things you also learn that he was against all forms of discrimination, the Stooges album 'Raw Power' was his number one favourite record, John Lennon was his 'idol' and he regarded getting the first three Beatles albums as an important positive step in his musical development, although there's also plenty that shows off the darker side to his character that would lead to his death in 1994. Some think publishing this stuff was an invasion of his privacy but I see it as an opportunity to understand him better, as I pretty much grew up listening to them!
