"Pan's Labyrinth" and "Hellboy" director Guillermo del Toro will co-write a trilogy of vampire thrillers with Chuck Hogan ("Prince of Thieves," "The Standoff") for HarperCollins says Variety.

The story will revolve around an invasion of New York City by a vampiric virus, and the series will trace the roots of the vampiric race back to its Old Testament origins.

The first book, "The Strain," hits bookstores next summer.

It might be good....if successful I can see films following

I saw this earlier on on some other site and just glanced at the story....I thought it meant he was doing 3 vampire films   Serves me right for not reading it thoroughly

I wonder why he going down the book route and not making them into films? Could be he's testing to see how well they do first?

Ypu know I thought the same about it being three films when I first seen it too

You could be right that he wants to check the water about its popularity before films

It's got an I Am Legend feel to the stories but tracing it back to the Old Testament is a good twist and should provide a good read!

Yep I like that element of that twist to these myself..though chances are I'll be waiting for the films to be released before I ever think about reading them

I'm the same Luc! Sometimes I buy books and it's months before I get round to reading them or I'd sooner see the films rather than read the books! Course, there's always the chance of the films being totally different to the books too

I think its better sometimes to be like that babe considering you can ruin a future film  for yourself if you read the book to it first.... better to read it after the film
