Caught the first showing at 0940 on Thursday morning. At first, I was a bit worried that it wasn't going to live up to my expectations as I loved Batman Begins and I was getting pretty hyped up. I needn't have worried though, as I was blown away. Even though it was directed again by Christopher Nolan, it felt quite different from Begins, but it was all the better for it. Your sucked in right from the begining when your thrown into a heist that felt like homage to Heat. You realise then that it's going to be so much more than just another Superhero film. It's to Nolan's credit, that he hasn't jettisoned characterisation for action. That's not to say there is less action, far from it, but his approach to Batman has always been a character piece instead of wham, bam, thank you ma'am. It is good to see a director who realises that you don't need to dumb down a sequel with more explosions and less story to get bums on seats.
When I went in, I distanced myself from the knowledge that Heath Ledger has passed on and instead decided to view the Joker as just another character so I could judge the performance clearly and I have to say it is Ledger's best performance of his tragically short life. You really do believe he is a psychopath capable of anything. If he does win an Oscar for his performance, it will be for his ability rather than sentimentallity.
I do not want to say anything about the storyline as it would spoil it and that would be unfair, but what I will say is if your kids ask to see this film, please think carefully as it may have a 12a rating, in truth it really is a 15. The BBFC have broken some of their own rating rules in giving it a 12a.
In my opinion, I honestly think that The Dark Knight has a strong case for film of the decade, let alone film of the year.
Ladies and Gentlemen, presenting to you the film of the year... The Dark Knight!
10/10

All the reviews I've seen have been excellent.....I was going to see it anyway but after JD's review I can't wait till the weekend
I'm glad you said about Heath's Oscar chances.....the cynics are already saying he'd win just because of sentimentality but some critics are saying he deserves to win because he's so fantastic as The Joker |

Damn straight! If he doesn't win, it'll be a travesty. On the other hand, it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't, as the Academy doesn't usually like comic book films. _________________ "Well, first of all, there's 4 of you. Your not exactly lone." |
