I've just finished reading this, a biography of 1966 World Cup winning England boss Sir Alf Ramsey. It's written by Leo McKinstry, a journalist, and aims to show the real Alf, as well as studying aspects of the beautiful game relevant to the times as he progresses from Ramsey's playing career with Southampton and Spurs through to his start in management at Ipswich Town and 11 years in charge of England before being sacked and going back into the club game with Birmingham City, and then up until his death in 1999.

It's a great read, giving you an insight into his mindset, views on football itself, tactical innovations and private life. Plus there are some good interviews with a selection of his former players. I'd recommend it if you like either biographies or sports books in general.

He always struck me as being the quiet, enigmatic sort and totally different from someone like Brian Clough! I couldn't imagine Sir Alf having skeletons in his closet, so it'd be interesting to read exactly what other people thought of him!

Apparently he was a quiet man, not one for publicity. In fact this book probably tells you more about him than the man himself ever would.
