We Own The Night
Set in Brooklyn in the late 80’s We Own The Night follows the story of two brothers, Bobby ( Joaquin Phoenix ) and Joe ( Mark Whalberg ) who are both caught up in the surge of the heroin trade, albeit on different sides of the law.
Joe has just been inducted as Captain in the police force by his father and chief of police Bert ( Robert Duvall ) and together they aim to crush the Russian gang who are flooding the streets of Brooklyn with heroin. Meanwhile the black sheep of the family Bobby is mixing with his deceased mothers side of the family in the club scene and enjoying the life that brings, including his relationship with Amada ( Eva Mendes ). Tipped off by his father and brother that they aim to take the streets back from the Russians, Bobby soon finds himself caught in the middle. It’s only a matter of time before the Russians are targeting Bert and Joe and Bobby is forced to change allegiance in order to save his family.
Whilst the storyline in We Own The Night is nothing new it is still an enjoyable, fairly well paced gangland film which will keep you interested throughout. The opening scene with Eva Mendes was worth the £3.95 rental fee alone but I can honestly say that Eva was not my main reason for seeing this. I think Phoenix and Whalberg have both put in better performances, the latter especially, but with a decent supporting role from Robert Duvall the characters are believable throughout.
If you like the gangster / gangland genre then you will undoubtedly enjoy We Own The Night
4/5

If you get it Luc you'll never think of a certain Blondie song in the same way again It's a pretty sexy scene!
Joaquin Phoenix has always been a bit hit and miss for me. He always lloks like he's sleepwalking his way through films but I actually liked him in this film. He plays Bobby the bad boy son in a police family. Hiis father despairs of him, but Bobby's forced to choose sides after certain events.
It was entertaining enough and though it wasn't a gripping film it still keeps you watching to see how it all pans out. The relationship between Robert Duvall as the father and Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix as the brothers is totally believable. |
