BBC wrote:
Hollywood actor Wesley Snipes has received a three-year prison sentence for tax offences.

A federal judge handed down the maximum term requested by prosecutors - a year for each of Snipes's convictions of wilfully failing to file a tax return.

Snipes's lawyers had called for leniency, arguing that the offences were misdemeanours and that the star was of good character.

But prosecutors said an example should be set because of Snipes's fame.

In February, Snipes was found guilty of deliberately failing to file tax returns for 1999, 2000 and 2001, but was cleared of more serious fraud and conspiracy charges.

United States District Judge William Terrell Hodges said the action star had shown a "history of contempt over a period of time" for US tax laws.

"In my mind these are serious crimes, albeit misdemeanours", he said.

Before sentencing, Snipes asked the court to show mercy, apologising for his behaviour by saying he was "an idealistic, naive, passionate, truth-seeking, spiritually motivated artist, unschooled in the science of law and finance".

He also offered three cheques amounting to $5m (£2.5m) as a gesture of good will.

Snipes is not currently in custody and it is not yet clear when he will have to surrender to authorities.

In the meantime, his lawyers have said they will appeal against the sentence.

The star of films such as Blade 3 and Demolition Man had asked for probation instead of imprisonment.

Fellow actors Woody Harrelson and Denzel Washington sent letters as character witnesses, as did family, friends and employees.

The actor's first role was in Goldie Hawn's 1986 American football comedy Wildcats, and he has also appeared in hit films such as White Men Can't Jump, and Passenger 57

Okay my first thoughts were What was he thinking not having any of his taxes sorted....has he no financial advisors at all...no Agent??
Then my next thought went to....Why is he still free and it is still unsure when he has to surrender to authorities?...if that was you or me or anyone else who was convicted you would be taken immediately to a holding cell until a proper place in a prison came up?
I actually didn't even know he was facing these charges in the first place ...what a silly thing I thought he was much smarter than that.....but in saying that I do think the Judge has gone too far with the sentence....when you think of all the people out there who are convicted of much worse crimes and don't recieve sentences like that

They do tend to be hard on tax dodgers in the US but I can't honestly see him serving the full 3 years. He'll probably serve a few months then an Appeal Judge will say he's been made an example of and he's offered to pay back $5 million, so he'll go free with a stern warning not to do it again. If he'd been found guilty of the fraud and conspiracy charges then he probably would be serving the full 3 years.

It won't harm his career.......Robert Downey Jr came back and I'm sure Wesley Snipes won't be short of film offers. I liked his defence of being "unschooled in the science of law and finance!......somehow I don't think that would work with ordinary people!

I think he's been sentenced like that because the courts see that he's famous and so want to make an example of him- it's nice to see a celebrity not getting preferential treatment compared to an average Joe for a change.

I wish we dealt with celebrities the same in this country. They always seem to be treated more leniently than ordinary people.

Yeah but was he treated that harsely.....I think he was given preferential treatment after which one of us would be given, after been convicted of a crime, the oportunity to go home after the trial and arrange later when the authorities can actually take him into custody.....its like he is now checking his schedule and is saying "oh yeah I'm free this day so it will be good for me then to take me to your jail"   .... If it was me or you we would be taken straight from the court

Sounds like its one rule for him, another for the rest of us which is ludicrous in my opinion. Bring back the stocks so people can hurl things at misbehaving celebs I say...

Seems fair to me- although I would use the system to get rid of all the famous people I hate!
