Because of the wobbly hand held camera work that feels like you're actually in the thick of the action.......people have complained of being sick and dizzy and some had to leave the cinema after 20 minutes!

SPOILER
I finally got to watch Cloverfield and I have to say I really enjoyed it....I think it is an extremely well directed piece by Matt Reeves who manages to make an authentic looking home video of a horrific and catastrophic event while also managing to keep the pace up and the content constantly relevant to the viewer which I reckon is much more difficult to do in a film created in this way. You really feel like your catapulted into the middle of the disaster much more than any other monster movie I've seen before even though we don't really get to know the main characters all that much. The camera that we see all the action through is operated by Hud who is like the joker of the pack, sometimes annoying and has a thing for Marlena who seems to have no real interest in him. The others are Rob, who the party at the beginning was for and whose venture to find his girlfriend Beth we follow, after his brother Jason gets killed, and Lily who is Jason's girlfriend. I thought it interesting to read that Lizzy Caplan who plays Marlena stated that she accepted a role in Cloverfield solely because she was a fan of the Abrams-produced television series Lost, and her experience of discovering its true nature initially caused her to state that she would not sign on for a film in the future "without knowing full well what it is." She indicated that her character was a sarcastic outsider, and that her role was "physically demanding.    I actually didn't think her character was that bad and warmed up as the movie went on......Oh and a word of warning if you ever end up in a city where a virus or some dangerous biological creatures are running around, you get scratched or bitten and wind up in a white sanitised military field hospital don't come over to everyone (particularly soldiers) and say "I don't feel well!!" because your likely to get lynched     ...poor Marlena  . The special effects were exellent too I thought and you could tell that Sept 11 inspired alot of the earlier parts particularly when the building collapses and they run into the shop to escape the cloud of dust coming their way...even when they then exited it was reminescent of 2001 with figures walking dazed, white with powdered dust and papers all over falling from the sky. I also liked the way it kept cutting to a happier time when the camera would be cut off momentarily.... anyone who has worked a home video camera before knows that this can happen alot   ...it was a good vehicle to keep Beth in our minds until they find her...it also helped to make the poignant ending while also showing something crash into the ocean beside them (sequel maybe even prequel?)
All in all a very good film that brings a refreshing change to the genre of monster flick though I did find myself squinting to see what exactly was going on at certain times which left me kind of feeling did I miss something somewhere?
9/10

Excellent review Luc

I'm always a bit sceptical when they say you'll feel as if you're in the film....... cause we're watching on a screen, looking through a handheld cam. But Cloverfield really gives the feeling of being in there among all the action. Clever stuff!

I suppose there could be a sequel Luc, it's on course to make a tidy profit but it hasn't been a huge hit considering all the speculation and buzz on the net leading up to the film's release.........kind of like Snakes on a Plane and all the hype that got before release. I'd like to see a sequel though.

I like how there wasn't a backstory to the monster too......it made it more scary cause it just appeared.

I'm glad you liked it too babe

As for the sequel apparently the makers have been talking about this and have mentioned during the film there is a sequence where you can see another guy over elsewhere filming aswell and you can see him filming Hud well there is talk that this might be an intersection point for the next film and this one where the sequel will be about this other film maker and his buds
