1 EDEN LAKE - Like "The Strangers" this is another couple in peril although the attackers this time are a group of teenagers. When Steve plans to take his girlfriend to the site of an old quarry before it's transformed into exclusive apartments, he doesn't envisage being the focus of the troubled teens violence. The tension builds up slowly and unlike The Strangers displays full on gore which is extremely visceral in many scenes. The acting is terrific especially Kelly Reilly as Steve's girlfriend Jenny and Michael Fassbender as Steve. Lookout for Thomas Turgoose last seen in This Is England and more recently Somers Town as one of the young gang. I wouldn't call it entertaining as sometimes it feels as if the violence goes too far, but it is a gripping thriller in the style of Straw Dogs.  8/10.

2 THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS - Anyone, including myself, who read the source novel know this exceptionally poignant story set during WWII. A young 8 year old boy together with his older sister and parents move from their plush house in Berlin to a smaller location on the outskirts. His father has just been promoted to Commandant of a concentration camp which borders their new home. Told from the perspective of the young boy Bruno (brilliantly played by Asa Butterfield).  Forbidden to play outside the area of the house he soon discovers the location of the camp near the house under the misapprehension that it's a farm, here he befriends one of the Jewish prisoners at the camp, an 8 year boy Schmuel (Jack Scanlon). Unfamiliar with the situation Bruno questions why he has to wear pyjamas all the time and whether the number sewn on the front represents a game of some sort. Expertly handled by director Mark Herman (Brassed Off, Little Voice) it's a compelling story of how war affects even the innocent, in a time of great brutality.  10/10

3 IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH - Tommy Lee Jones is superb as the war veteran trying to find out what happened after his son was listed as AWOL during his term in Iraq. What starts as a simple missing person case soon becomes apparent that the incident has far reaching consequences. Well made and involving thriller that also sees excellent support from Charlize Theron as the investigator assigned to the case, Susan Sarandon as Jones's wife and Josh Brolin as Theron's boss. Tough and uncompromising it's riveting from the opening shots of the film taken by Jones's son on his mobile in Iraq.  9/10

Brill   all those films sound the business I have to say.... The Boy in the Stripped Pyjamas sounds very intriguing though I imagine quite sad too...I must watch out for it in particular but as I said all sound great

2 films actually

Kate and Leopold: Rom-com, where a modern New Yorker finds a time portal and is followed back by an 18th century Duke, who then proceeds to sort out his life and those of his friends, using 18th century wisdom.
I thought this film would be far too corny and ridiculous but thanks to the acting of Hugh Jackman and the non typical character of Meg Ryan, it was surprisingly affecting. Hugh made the part of Leopold real instead of just a stuffy old Brit. He showed how good old fashioned values [politeness, knowledge, conversational skills] are missing from today's world. Meg Ryan was for once not playing a dizzy girlie, but an unfeminine 'woman in a man's world' type. Of course the inevitable happened in the end, but as it was Hugh, I forgave them.

Ladies in Lavender: Gentle drama with a message. Two elderly spinster sisters find a [very] young man washed up on the beach injured, nurse him back to health and all sorts of awkward situations ensue.
This film was about my absolute favourite subject: Unrequited/ Forbidden/ Hopeless Love. It is in the same class as Remains of the Day; Lost in Translation; Brokeback Mountain; A Month in the Country, Girl with a Pearl Earring etc. So if you liked those you will almost certainly like 'L in L'.
Anyway, I now realise even more why Judi Dench is one of our most talented actresses [also Maggie Smith but she was in a more supporting role]. The plight of the women left behind by the men they lost in the wars of the late 19th/ early 20th centuries was equally as tragic. Condemned to live out their lives never knowing love, being married, having children, because there were not enough men left alive. A generation of women remaining forever girls in their hearts as their bodies decayed around them. What a waste.

The only trouble was, I kept expecting Colin Farrell to come knocking at their door offering his services

The Transporter - Jason Statham as Frank Martin, an ex-military man who makes a living transporting goods with no questions asked. He lives by a set of rules but his well ordered life is thrown into disarray when he breaks his own rule and opens up a bag he's transporting.......it's a full blown action romp from start to finish with lots of comedy mixed in with the action stunts.....and one of the most entertaining films I've seen in a while!

You Me And Dupree - Kate Hudson and Matt Dillon as newlyweds living the dream until Dupree (Owen Wilson) comes to stay with them and their dream becomes a nightmare! Good film.... not as funny as I'd hoped it would be but still good!

Shadow Puppets - A low budget scifi/horror with James Marsters, Jolene Blalock and Tony Todd....who scifi fans will know from Buffy and Star Trek series. A woman (Blalock) wakes up in a padded room wearing only her undies and with no memory of who she is or why she's there. The door of her room opens and she steps out into a corridor where she finds other people in cells,  half dressed and no memories either. They hear beast like sounds and gradually realise that someone....or something..... is stalking them. It's not a bad little film, the effects are good and there's a nice sense of menace....but it isn't as scary as it should have been.
