I think this looks pretty good..I like the idea of it...its based on a a tilogy of books called His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) is a young girl living at Jordan College in the Oxford of an alternate world much like our own where everyone is accompanied by a daemon, a physical representation of their soul in animal form. Lyra overhears a strange meeting between her Uncle, Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig) and the scholars at Jordan college about other worlds and some substance called dust. After this meeting she is unsure about the true nature of her college. As time passes children around Oxford begin to disappear by the hands of a group known as the Gobblers. When Lyra's friend Roger (Ben Walker) is taken, she and her daemon Pantalaimon (Freddie Highmore voice) set off on an epic journey to find him.
There is a great cast with others being....
Nicole Kidman playing the beautiful evil leader
Ian McKellen (voice)
Eva Green
Sam Elliott
Kathy Bates
Christopher Lee

I'm looking forward to seeing it......the trailers look good and all the things I've read about it point to it being a good film......but then again, I looked forward to seeing the other fantasy film, Stardust, and I didn't think it was as good as the critics said. It was a bit pantomimish but the last 30 minutes I enjoyed! |

Oh really babe? I never got round to seeing Stardust.... I had a feeling it was being boosted up a bit much and Jonathan Ross I suppose was always going to be biased
What were Michele Pfieffer or Bob De Niro like in it? _________________

Yeah he had an interest in Stardust right from the start!
Michelle Pfieffer was good as the witch......all nice one minute then nasty and evil the next! It looked like she was having a blast in the role and she was one of the standouts for me.
Robert De Niro had some funny moments......especially when he was singing while wearing a particularly fetching outfit! He was the fierce captain who everyone feared but he liked to display his feminine side
The sfx/cgi were excellent and I'll be buying the DVD when it comes out because I have a feeling I'll like it more seeing it a second time! Some films I love as soon as I see them and others I'm not as sure of but they grow on me.......I think this one's a grower! |

| Watched the Golden Compass on friday and straight after American Gangster so it had a lot to live upto, it didnt disappoint. A slow start, similar to the book imo but once it got going it was superb. Nicole Kidman is brilliant as the devious Miss Coulter and the CGI effects are brilliant. It does differ to the book but if you can ignore the differencs and take it for what it is you will really enjoy it and be left ready for the Subtle Knife. |

I've seen it too and really enjoyed it Stardust disappointed me but The Golden Compass is much better! Dakota Blue (love the name!) is excellent.......very natural and Nicole Kidman is superb as the nasty Miss Coulter, all nice as pie one minute and ruthless the next.
I loved the daemons and the armoured bear too |

| Hi Luc, I've read the trilogy twice and both times I found the first book quite difficult to get into but perservered each time as it does get really good and carries on throughout book 2 and 3, well worth a read if you havent read them before. |

I haven't read them mate...I realy should though ...but I think I will see the first film first...... the books tend to ruin a film for me as I always end up like many thinking the film is a pale reflection of the book
I still hhaven't seen Stardust either yet Cat _________________
