A small wooden box arrives on the doorstep of a troubled married couple, who open it and become instantly wealthy. Little do they realize that opening the box also kills someone they do not know ...
Cameron Diaz and Frank Langella will star in this $30 million horror film "The Box" and its directed by Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko and Southland Tales)

When I heard the plot of this lately it rang a bell with me immediately....for it wasn't that long ago that I had seen a very similar story....remember I got for Xmas last year a load of old 80's Twilight Zone boxsets well one of the stories is just like this .....so after looking it up further...both are based on the same short story called Button Button
In the Twilight Zone Episode it was a box with a button on top but I think the film will differ also in the TTZ the couple knew it would kill someone they didn't know in the film they are apparently kept in the dark....which I have to say I find a strange difference...Anyway sounds interesting

So when they open the box, someone they don't know dies?
Oh well, what you don't know can't harm you!

Well I think the both of you are hitting the nail on the head on what I was referring to when I said it was a strange difference..... its a bit silly to give them a box that grants you wishes or riches but with a price of killing someone you don't know if the couple don't actually know it I think they must find out pretty early on

Richard Kelly has confirmed that production has wrapped on his third feature "The Box".

The story does differ to what I had already heard before and wrote on here..thank goodness because the idea they were not to know that it would kill someone else from the beginning was silly..this is the synopsis now.....

Diaz & Marsden play Norma and Arthur Lewis who are faced with a terrible dilemma when a mysterious glass box turns up at their door. If they press the button inside the box, they'll get enough money to save their ailing son, but in exchange, someone, somewhere in the world will die.

When the temptation to save their beloved son becomes too much to bear, Norma pushes the button. Immediately, a gunshot rings out somewhere nearby. Consumed with guilt.
Norma must do everything in her power to solve a murder she has knowingly caused.

I thought it would be some kind of supernatural type film but it sounds more of a murder mystery one now......a serial killer who gets his kicks forcing people to question their consciences perhaps?

It still sounds intriguing though!

Yep I have to agree with you both ...I thought it was going to be a supernatural ..almost horror film kind of feel to it and even though like you Cat I like murder mysteries...this was not what I thought this film would be like. ...though perhaps we are calling it too soon and maybe it will have the magical element still very much a factor?
