I know ALL about sleep deprivation believe me!!! For the past 3 weeks the old lady next door to me has had her telly on blaring all night!! I've been round several times but she suffers from dementia and won't have it that it's the middle of the f'n night!!! Or that it's on loud. I have been so tired that I don't know what I'm doing or saying and find myself just stopping what I'm doing and crying for no reason at all.

In the past I have not slept, at all, for 4 days on the run and I was really ill, I got a very high temperature and even started hallucinating!!! People don't realise what being REALLY tired is and how dangerous going without sleep can be.

Still, you will have your kiddies won't you!

Does she have family who visit or a carer you could talk to Honey? If she's by herself then she really should have someone staying with her or checking up on her.

I've spoken to her daughter the last time she went through a phase like this, she came round to the house for a chat and that's when I found out she had started with dementia. She did say to ring her again if there were any more problems but we didn't like to bother her over Christmas & NY so my husband is going to ring her this week. Although thankfully the last 2 nights have been quiet. There's not a lot you can do though, she (presumably) isn't doing it maliciously and you wouldn't believe some of the cuckoo conversation I've had with her when I've been round in the middle of the night!! She asked me last time if there was any time in the evening I wasn't in bed, I said I don't go to bed in the evening, it's the middle of the night!!! It was about 2.30am!

At least she's lucid some of the time which is good, but it doesn't help much when you're trying to sleep! You'll feel on edge too waiting to see if it'll be one of her good nights or not! I suppose she'll have to be assessed every now and then to see if the dementia's going worse..... and she could have to go into a home or her daughter will have to look after her.

You can get soundproof panels for your walls to try and cut down the noise from next door, or maybe move the bed to another part of the bedroom away from the wall where you hear her tv the most.......but if her tv's on full blast you'll still hear it I suppose!

That's absolutely right Cat! It's so stressful that even when she's quiet it's hard to relax wondering if the telly is suddenly going to come on. Really annoying not sleeping when it's quiet.

It's funny you say that, I didn't realise you could get soundproofing panels but what we were thinking of doing was clad the wall in cardboard, hang some nice thick curtain material over it as wallpaper, move my wardrobe and bookshelves against that wall and the bed to the opposite wall. There isn't as much room unfortunately as there is a cupboard door on that side and the door into the bedroom in the corner. But I'll give anything a go!!! When it's really loud I can hear it in every room in the house! She had a very weird couple of days where she seemed to turn the telly up to full volume then quiet then full volume over & over. You could hear every word, it was so loud we couldn't hear our own telly!! Crazy person!!

My husband is lucky, he can sleep through anything, wish I was like that.

Would you not think of getting earplugs Honey?

It might be the more economical and less hassle alternative?

I've tried that clever clogs!! I can't stand having ear plugs in though, it feels like your ears are blocked and you can hear every noise amplified in your head by a million like breathing, or the covers brushing against you, or your heart beat. I can stand it for about 10 minutes then have to take them out and put up with the telly instead.

You offer an alternative and your attacked for it

How can noises be amplified in your head Honey? I don't know which one I'd hate to live next door to most?

Believe it or not Luc but Honey's right   I know I had a plug of cotton wool in my ear once when I was a child (think I had earache!) and every time I moved in bed the rustling was deafening! It's probably something to do with vibrations and noises being distorted in the ears from the plugs!
