The Tardis is being completely redesigned in time for the arrival of the new Doctor Who.

BBC bosses have given the green light to completely refit the interior for a radical new look.

They will also improve the quality of the police box exterior for the opening episode featuring new Time Lord Matt Smith.

Production sources say the decision is being taken by new Doctor Who writer and executive producer Stephen Moffat, who wants to distance himself from previous show chief Russell T Davies.

He wants the arrival of Matt Smith to signify a new era, and also to withstand Doctor Who being in high definition. A source said: "It will be the most hitech, intricate Tardis ever."

Smith, 26, who will become the 11th Time Lord next year, will be the youngest actor to play the 903-year-old doctor.

ohhh all very excitng now        i can't wait

How will they explain the new look Tardis? Part of the show's charm is having a creaky old Tardis that acts up from time to time! Maybe the new Doctor will crash land on an alien planet and the aliens repair the Tardis with more futuristic parts

I can't wait to see the new look Tardis....and if fans like it!

How did they explain the difference in the inside of the tardis from McCoy's Doctor to Ecclestone's???? In other words they didn't explain..... they just altered it to suit a new guy....it also makes me think that Tennant will cease near the end of a special bringing in the new guy....that way in the new 5th season it will just show the new Doctor appearing with a new look Tardis

As for the outside of the Tardis the changes will be just minor...there has been minor changes on the police box throughout the years but nothing too noticeable

Good explanations Luc   It could very well turn out the way you say...you should be a writer for Doctor Who

I read Donna, Martha and Rose could be back to give the old Doctor a good send off.......it seems weird thinking of Tennant as the old Doctor!

if i was writing for Who babe...he woud be going to some hot and erotic worlds i can tell you     it would be Dr Who X-rated style

i don't know about bringing them all back again either  ...do you not feel too babe that they have done that now and we have gotten the t-shirt...do we really need them all returning...i think it should be a completly new start....no old assistants back....well not for a while anyway

Oh yeah, change is always needed to keep a programme fresh- after all they did it when Doctor Who was first brought back on the air and I guess now that a new Doctor will be on the scene a rethink was needed as things happen in the world of telly!

I saw an article Russell T Davies wrote saying he "can't wait to kill off the tenth doctor"....definitely a case of out with the old and in with the new!

I'd have been happy for David Tennant to carry on a few more years...but I'm excited to see how Matt Smith will be as the Doctor.....he has an edgy, almost sinister or creepy look about him, as well as having that weird hairstyle
