The Bone Collector.

This is an interesting premise for a film, one cop with disability so bad that his mind is one of the only things that works properly, another cop, who used to work in a department so scorned that no-one seems to take her seriously, but she has a knack for crime scenes. They come together in the middle of a spate of really nasty and clinical crimes that seem to be linked by the fact the killer keeps part of the victim’s bones.

In theory I liked this film, It was reasonably acted, well cast, well filmed and decently directed (by Phillip Noyce, who has made some cracking films, like the quiet American and dead calm) In reality, I wanted more from the film! I wanted to get to know these people better, I wanted Angelina to be less attractive (I’m crazy, I know) I wanted Denzel to actually stretch himself rather than put out another decent Cop thriller.

This is what Denzel does best, just a quick look at his resume shows a number of these films. Deja Vous, Inside man, The Manchurian Candidate, Man on fire, Training day, The siege, Fallen, Courage under fire, The pelican Breif. Denzel does Cop/Lawyer/Military man, to a tee. This is not his most convincing role. He kind of strolls through it, Which is pretty hard considering he doesn’t move for the whole movie. The only time I felt that he was stretching his character past the uber angelic was when he was ridiculing himself following a seizure.

I also think that there were too many characters, one of which (Rooker) was so clichéd that it was at times really obvious that he wasn’t going to make it to the final credits.

To sum up, I found the film to be a decent film, well made with an interesting story. Sadly it could have been a great film that took a step away from the comfort zone of normal crime thrillers, sadly for us it didn’t.
