Mystery Men:

The story of some not so super hero's. done as a straight comedy it is classic Ben Stiller with some excellent lines (often missed on first viewing) like "He fell down an elevator shaft.......... on to some bullets"

It has a decent cast. Stiller, Hank Azaria (Simpson voices), Greg kinnear, Claire forlani, William H Macy, Jeanne garafolio (?) Geoffrey Rush, Eddie izzard and Paul Reubens (Pee wee Herman, and the voice of the Navigator) and they all play there part well. One of my favourite characters though is "invisible boy" (Kel Mitchell) and one of the best comedy ideas of someone who is invisible, but only when no-one is looking at him and he is not looking at himself!

I really enjoyed this film as it suits my sense of humour to a tee. The pace is good and the story is always busy enough to keep you interested. The characters are well constructed and shallow enough to always potentially be disposable without affecting the films comedy aspects.

It's not perfect, the film would benefit from being filmed a little lighter at times, and Also Mr amazing as a character is not quite believable as an amazing super hero and comes across as a bit dim and not really capable of catching Casanova Frankenstein in the first place.

But as a comedy you cant beat it for 2 hours of escapist fun!

Mystery Men

I taped it, then when I played it the other night I found out I'd missed some of the film off I don't know how much I missed but it didn't matter because at first the film seemed pretty average It felt like they could have done more with it.........BUT, and here comes the good news Luc and Chump!........the more I got into the film, the more I liked it! (Told you it was good news )

I liked the idea that they weren't some kind of incredibly good looking, gleaming white teeth, all American super heroes types but they were misfits, with problems at home and generally down on their luck types.

The film had some genuinely funny moments like when 2 of them were arguing about Captain Amazing and Lance Hunt being the same person.....and one said they couldn't be the same because Lance Hunt wears glasses Then when the Mystery Men used a clothes shrinking weapon on Casanova Frankenstein's henchwomen, Mr Furious said his trousers were getting tighter too! Very funny!

The film was quirky with some great ideas for the Mystery Men's Powers..........not the usual X-ray vision, man of steel type hero, but someone who could throw cutlery incredibly accurately, another with her dead dad's skull in a bowling ball which bounced off things pinball style, The Shoveller who used his shovel as a weapon, Mr Furious who got erm very angry lol!, Invisible Boy who became invisible when nobody watched him and The Spleen who put the wind up his opponents!

Eddie Izzard played Tony P, one of the Disco Boys. loved his Saturday Night Fever routine Geoffrey Rush was so far over the top as Casanova Frankenstein that he came down the other side but you could see he was having a blast in the part. Looking through the credits I noticed the film's director, Kinka Usher, listed as Moe......who was that cause I can't remember the character?

All in all I'm glad I stuck with the film...... from thinking it a bit boring at first, by the end I thought it was a brilliant parody of all the superhero films......and I loved it!
