WHAT SCARES YOU?

Done a thousand times within a thousand different boards, but not me with you on this forum; so its a fair game topic LOL

For me, i was always scared by creepy voices on the telephone detailing murders and ststtsttststtuff..........cue Hotline, Fear, Mean Season et al........................

but for others (like my big brother) it is Clowns that hit the mark

for my wife it is ghosts

so is it.............ghosts, clowns, serial killers, thrillers, stalkers, slashers, creepy crawlies, voices, animals, werewolves, vampires, etc etc etc orrrrrrrr something else entirely?

tell us please (and a film that does it will do too please)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
big aundy

the only thing that makes me jump , not so much now , but was when i watched jaws , and the head falls out the bottom of the boat .
Catnapper

I've said before about ventriloquist's dummies (Dead of Night)   so anything where an inanimate object comes to life would scare me!
Scorpio

you are a hard man if thats all theat scares you - either that or you watch few horrors.............

i remember your little phobia catty LOL; its weird what scares us eh!!!!!!have you seen ghoulies, childs play, xtro and   errrrrm lots of others

they never bother me to be honest,; its more psychological stuff that does it for me now!!!!!! voices/noises, a chase and a kill

LOL
Catnapper

Nope I haven't seen those Scorp....I wonder why?!!

I like psychological horror best but things like malevolent spirits (The Ring, Shining) and slasher/torture horror films scare me the most!

Something else that's scary.......not to watch in a film....but if I was in that situation I'd be terrified......is someone who's waiting to be hanged, beheaded, torn apart by horses (like in a film I saw the other week   ) in the electric chair and things like that. You know you've only got minutes before you die.......that's a really scary thought
Nostromo Crew Member

With regards to horror movies and what scares me, is the unseen. It's what the film maker doesn't show that I find the most scary, or just showing a glimpse of the horror rather than full on. It achieves the effect perfectly.

That and the first time I saw Alien at the cinema, I was finding popcorn in my clothes for weeks after that.
Catnapper

I thought the scene where the spirit comes out of the tv set in The Ring was scary   It was the way she kept on coming towards the screen and I kept thinking she'll stop....but she didn't
Lucifer_666

I have to admit to loving the psychological stuff too....and when you mix an idea of pure evil with children and throw in some creepy music to boot you pretty much have got me looking slightly over my shoulder   For example I love The Exorcist and The Omen movies
Scorpio

exorcist is brilliant - as is the exorcist III - a very underrated film that has fantastic performances from George C. Scott and Brad Douriff (especially his rant)
Lucifer_666

Yep I agree mate Exorcist 3 is pretty decent and doesn't get recognised enough...I think the second film damaged its credibility really where people just couldn't be bothered to see the third and just label it anothe scrappy sequel ...I also really like George C Scott too
Scorpio

part 2 was dog 5hit
gellarbing

the movie IT scares the bejesus out of me, that clown is the scariest clown ive ever seen, even now it gives me nightmares, i still like the film though
Lucifer_666

Yep the second Exorcist was bad and seemed to focus alot if memory serves me right on herds of Locusts

IT is brilliant... I really like that film too ..Pennywise is class ...very creepy ......Tim Curry does a good job there

Beep beep Ritchie!!
gellarbing

you know i totally forgot it was tim curry
but yeah he does a great job
Lucifer_666

Thats actually what I love about Tim Curry in that role ...he;s the same in Legend aswell....you just wouldn't recognise him and I don't mean just the make-up either .......he acting is top rate
Catnapper

He deserves more credit....you never see him winning awards or even being nominated for awards but lesser actors get more recognition
Jipdog

You got to love Tim Curry. I think he's great, well, apart from Congo and him saying "The lost City of Zinj" about 10 times in the funniest accent known to man.
big aundy

one film i haven't seen is the Exorcist
Scorpio

he was also A1 in the rocky horror picture show
Catnapper

Yeah he was cool in Rocky Horror

You'd like The Exorcist Andy....an excellent film. It takes a while to get going but the exorcism scenes rock!

Speaking about IT.......what did you think of the ending? I thought it would turn out different with all the friends reuniting to defeat Pennywise, so it felt a bit strange the way it ended?
gellarbing

its been yearssince i seen it last, what happens at the end again?
Lucifer_666

The Exorcist is brilliant Sta Cats right...well worth a watch...just bare in mind the year it was made too it had some very good special effects for its time

What did you find strange about the ending of IT  babe??

From what I remember they all go back to the place where they got rid of him as kids well apart from one who kills himself at the beginning of the film but John Boy Walton's Girlfriend stands in for him and ends up catatonic

I suppose the scenes at the end where he takes her out on his old bike to try and bring her back to life when she seems pretty much tranced or something are strange and not really explained but then again neither is Pennywise really explained
Scorpio

i hated the end - instead of just a demon/paedophile we have a giant spider........terrible IMHO; a trash end to a fantastic film

sorry for those that enjoyed the end
Catnapper

On my IT dvd it ends with a guy in the bath with slit wrists and IT scrawled on the wall in blood........I didn't know if he'd killed himself or if Pennywise had killed him.......but you said Luc that the group actually go back to the town?

I have an awful feeling that either my dvd's been cut off before the end   .......or there should be 2 dvds....and I've only got one   No wonder the "ending" seemed strange!
Scorpio

oh my........that sounds like the guy with his gf who gets the cll then kills himself (i think he is jewish bo)..................................you are missing tons
halfhearted LOL
Lucifer_666

At least you have the second part to enjoy now babe some other time

As for the ending ...I do agree that it would have been better had Pennywise more of a history and was perhaps a child killer clown in life...though I suppose the evil entity thing using the guise of a clown is really more King's style
Catnapper

I tried fast forwarding through the film.....and through the audio commentary too and both times it reached the suicide scene....before going straight back to the play movie/special features part at the start of the dvd

I even tried flipping over the dvd and trying to play that side too, cause I know sometimes you can do that with a dvd.........but there isn't a part 2 on the other side either! Even the dvd case doesn't say part 1........so I've no idea why I've only got half of the prog      There's only room in the case for 1 dvd so it's not like I'm missing another one!......Very strange!

I'll have to catch the film on tv one time if it's repeated......or buy another dvd
Scorpio

thats a nightmare catty - you must have thought ending was a joke LOL
Catnapper

It had me wondering for a while Scorps   ....especially when no credits came up too!
Jipdog

Makes you wonder if it was a mis-pressing, and loads of people have the same problem? I haven't seen it in years and that was on an old VHS copy.
Catnapper

You could be right Jip....I'm hoping it only happened with my dvd, so it's rare and worth thousands of pounds   I looked on the dvd case and it says the running time should be 180 minutes which is about right (give or take a few mins) when I looked up the film's running time on imdb........so it could be a mis-pressing or the dvd is faulty. I might email Warner Bros and ask them about it.
Catnapper

I just looked on Amazon for the It dvd.......read some of the comments there and people are saying it's a double sided dvd that should play the 2nd half of the prog

I'd already tried playing the other side but maybe I didn't wait long enough for it to start playing.......I hope so!
Jipdog

Give it another go and let us know!
Scorpio

Catnapper

I gave it another go....and.......it still won't play    I flipped the dvd over and tried playing it and got a message saying I couldn't play or record it   Looks like it's a faulty dvd

I'll look out for the video when I go to carboots this weekend!
Jipdog

D'oh!
Scorpio

do that

LOL
Catnapper

They did an experiment in a magazine to find the scariest film. They hooked 2 volunteers up to heart monitors and the volunteers watched a selection of scary films......The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Nightmare on Elm Street etc etc........the one that scared them the most was............Friday the Thirteenth!
Jipdog

Please. Friday 13th? I don't find 80's horror films scary. Nightmare on Elm Street is just funny nowadays. The only horror film that I have seen from the 80's I find creepy is the first half of Poltergeist. I like the whole film, but it is quite accurate up until the point of the tree attacking and the girl being sucked into another dimension.
gellarbing

poltergiest isanother film that gives me nightmares, once after i watched it i dreamt i was been dragged up a mirror, kicking and screaming
Lucifer_666

Friday the 13th???? Oh God how could that have scared them most??

I always think of the little woman psychic from poltergiest shouting "Carol Ann"
Catnapper

It was the scene in Friday the 13th where she's in a rowing boat on Crystal Lake that scared them the most!
big aundy

when jason jumps out the water and grabs them   .

aye that carol ann was spooky .
Scorpio

the bit where kevin bacon gets his throat skewered out is pretty good, but slasher movies don't scare me that much
Jipdog

For a horror film to work for me, it has to be a ghost story or a supernatural creature. A nutjob in a mask that just slashes people does not do anything for me. Get too much of that in real life, minus the, masks of course.
Scorpio

so you prefer total reality then jipdog

LOL
Jipdog

Eh?
Scorpio

Your post reminded me of my wife - she hates anything where a psycho is running around killing people; as she finds it unrealistic......whereas she finds ghost films very scary indeed (like they ARE realistic)

thats all

not taking the P155, i just find it funny
Catnapper

It could be because we're always hearing or reading about psychos/serial killers on tv and in the papers that it doesn't have the same scary effect if you see a film about them. We know that kind of crime goes on but we're somehow detached from it.....that's my theory anyway

I tend to look away sometimes if the slasher psycho is going to chop off limbs.....I know what's going to happen so I prefer not to see it   But with a ghost/supernatural film, you don't know what's going to happen (like the spirit coming through the tv set) so it seems scarier somehow!
Phil

Weird. I find it the other way around.
Nutters are much more scary as its realistic.
I think the trick though is to make a slasher flick very gritty, nasty, dark - ie Seven, SAW rather than Friday 13th!!

I think theres a real whole in the horror genre for a real nasty, dark, dirty slasher film with a good story, well made and dark ending.
Scorpio

YES YES YES, you are totally on the money for me Phil

Saw, Switchblade Romance, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original), Mean Season, Just Before Dawn among so many others just have a sense of the macabre - that i like
Phil

hehe..me too!!
Scorpio

i like films surrounding the parnormal, but they just chill you, they never scare you
Catnapper

I know what you mean Phil and Scorp.......if you were locked in a room with a chainsaw/axe weilding psycho and a ghost, the psycho would probably be scarier because he's real and you know what he'd do....ie hack you to pieces! So the danger is very real and you can see it but there's also a chance you could fight him and maybe even win! But with a ghost, you wouldn't know what it's capable of and what it intends doing.....and it could be invisible too, so you can't fight back!

But if I was confronted by a chainsaw psycho or a ghost....both would terrify me
Scorpio

i'd just find a midget with a high pitched voice
Lucifer_666

Why has Twin Peaks come straight into my head
Scorpio

thats a midget that cannot dance - with a blonde hottie speaking backwards

BUT, whatever turns you on!!!!!
Lucifer_666

Oh yeah...you got to love Twin Peaks

As for my turn ons...have you ever seen the obscure film 'The Sinful Dwarf'??
