Stir of Echoes

The Witzky's, Tom, Maggie and their son Jake, live a fairly normal life in Chicago in the late 90s. Tom feels that he should be making more of his life but they're a happily married couple with a bright young son.......but what the parents don't know is that Jake can see dead people (cue a Sixth Sense reference!), or to be more precise, he sees and talks to an invisible presence called Samantha.

Tom and Maggie go to a party where Maggie's sister, who's a trainee hypnotherapist, offers to hypnotise a sceptical Tom. It turns out he's one of the 8% of people who responds well to hynotism.........and he later starts having hallucinations of a ghostly young woman, along with premonitions of the future. As the hallucinations overwhelm him he seems on the verge of madness as he tries to find out what happened to the woman and who she is.

It's a chilling but classy film adaptation of Richard Matheson's book with the setting switched from 50s California to 90s Chicago. The writer/director, David Koepp, contrasts the Witzky's seemingly ordinary life with flashes of horror that keep you gripped right till the end. The images of the ghostly Samantha are well done and add to the chilling feel of the movie.

Good cast with Kevin Bacon his useful brilliant self as Tom Witzky and with good support from Katherine Erbe as Maggie, Zachary David Cope as their son Jake and Illeana Douglas as the wacky, pot smoking hypnotist.

Good film but I couldn't get why Tom was thirsty all the time? I thought too that the ending was left open so there could have been a sequel?

Great review babe
I done a very silly thing yesterday I deleted my Stir of Echoes recording by accident I should be able to download it though over the weekend but it means my review will be late again ....sorry!!
I will definitely put it up though when I get watching it
lord vader

, well doen mate , me and wife are getting a dvd this saturday , not sure what one yet .
Lucifer_666

Its not funny Sta On a dvd recorder with hard drive there is a menu that you can do certain things with recordings like rename them, delete, etc and I hit ok at delete by accident when I mean't to rename it .....urrrggghhhhhhh
Catnapper

No probs Luc.... I've taped over things by accident before so I know what it's like!

At least you get to record on your DVDR though....
Lucifer_666

Yeah its a very handy machine alright but it didn't feel like that last night.. . blasted thing
Catnapper

My TV plays freeview but as soon as I switch the DVDR on the TV can't recognise freeview
Lucifer_666

You knw that could be one piece of equipment's signal interferring with the other babe
Catnapper

Well how do you stop it interfering?!
lord vader

do they use the same channel cat
Catnapper

No idea Andy......I didn't hook it all up!
lord vader

if there both scartred they may well use the same channel and that could be the problem
Catnapper

I think I'd better get someone in to have a look.......I tried messing around with them last night and now the DVDR won't work at all Luckily I've still got my old DVD player and that's working fine!

I've got my TV, DVDR, set top box and a VCR all using the same 2 sockets.......maybe there are too many wires and like you said the signals are interfering cause it's a mass of wires behind my TV....
Lucifer_666

It definitely sounds like a signal interference due to another signal your putting through aswell

the best way to check its not your equipment is to connect each up to your tv individually just to make sure each is working as it should....

Ermm or perhaps just get someone in to look at it for you?? I mean your goods ...erm.. I mean your electrical goods
Catnapper

I'll try that Luc.....thanks

Hey, my goods are in full working order
lord vader

yeah i bet they are cat
Lucifer_666

Well I'm not sure I may have to go in to test their effectiveness
The Man Chump

I recon you need an aerial booster, I needed one to get the proper reception for freeview if I was using more than one port.

I'm back BTW!
Catnapper

Hey good to see you back Chump

I can watch freeview progs on my TV but as soon as I switch the DVDR on it refuses to recognise freeview...... Looking on the net though lots of people have trouble with set top boxes and digital TVs.
Madamhoney

Hi Chump

It does make you wonder doesn't it Cat, how they can justify rushing through digital when it still doesn't work properly!! I think the NW is moving over to it at the moment. There was a map on telly the other day and we're due in 2012 (same as you Luc) woohoo!! Even longer away than I thought!

When you use your DVD thingy, does that mean you record onto a DVD then, like you would a tape? I know a lot of people have that where you tape on your TV, if you know what I mean, which I personally think is crap cause then you can't watch it in another room if you want to. A friend of mine used to do that with Smallville and then copy it onto a video for me but the picture always came out funny and squished up and then I had to turn the volume up really loud to be able to hear it. Progress, I don't think so!!!
Catnapper

I bought my digital TV because of all the warnings about analogue being turned off completely by 2012. I was going to buy one with freeview already built in to it but the picture on the non- freeview one looked better so that's the one I bought. After all the probs I've been having, I'm glad I didn't get the one with freeview in it, it's bad enough with the set top box!

The DVDR has a hard drive so the progs can be stored on to that or on to DVD (I think!)......I'm not very technical I'm afraid
Lucifer_666

Hi Chump welcome back mate

A dvd recorder works the same more or less to a video one when you press record it will record the channel displayed...its on the playback that it differs and becomes alot handier it creates like a menu system on the
disc so you just have to click on individual windows which displays the different recordings you have made and it goes instantly to the recording of choice...no more searching through tapes looking for that programme
It is also much easier to visually fast forward and rewind too and of course freeze frame for those special Garak and Malcolm moments

On the bad side you can't just record anywhere like you can on a tape...for example if you left a tape recording five minutes after a film you can then rewind it back to the end credits and start recording something new directly after them on a dvd recording if you record five mins after a film your stuck with them (well with most basic dvd
recorders anyway)

As for your friend Honey he obviously used a scart lead to record from dvd to video it seriously reduces the sound and even the picture...usually makes it much darker too

Yep I have a dvdr aswell Cat its a great job.....it saves having to go looking for discs and you can just save loads of programmes or films on the hard drive....which you can then put unto disc if you so wish
Catnapper

Yes, a DVDR's a wonderful thing.....if you can get it working

One of these days......hopefully!
Lucifer_666

You will babe
The Man Chump

Catnapper

Luc's the one to ask......he's got the list!
The Man Chump
