Anyone who hasn't seen The Manchurian Canditate should definitely watch that regardless of what else you watch. Denzel Washington and Liev Schreiber and Meryl Streep are all brilliant in it. Fantastic story and very well made. I first saw it in a cinema in Copenhagen.
lord vader

yeah agreed rodders , i bought it on dvd , brilliant film
Madamhoney

Well, if you want to pick that film that's fine, I haven't joined in with any of them so far anyway. Though isn't my cup of tea have to say.
roddglenn

No, I didn't mean it as the pick, just that it's a good film regardless of what is picked.
Madamhoney

Yeah I know. I'm just saying, if other people want to pick it I don't mind.
lord vader

no no you can pick the film madam.
roddglenn

Yes, let the lovely Madam of the Honey pick
Catnapper

I've seen the original Manchurian Candidate that starred Frank Sinatra and Lawrence Harvey so I'll watch the other one too to see if it's as good.

You pick a film out Honey.......it doesn't matter if you don't do a review
Madamhoney

OK, then I'm going to choose Hellboy (though I'm going to watch Crouching Tiger too anyway, just don't know when I'll get round to it - LOL!)
Catnapper

Hellboy it is then

I was going to watch it anyway!
lord vader

looks good i haven't seen it before.
Lucifer_666

Good stuff Flickers I'll set my recorder
The Man Chump

I have it on dvd so no need for me to stay up rediculously late (or try to in last weeks case) oops!!!!

Good stuff!!!
Catnapper

Yay Chump

You can get an early night then!
The Man Chump

Yeh indeed, And congrats for getting to the 1000 mark on the posts.

I'll have a min celebration when i get to 100!
Lucifer_666

Hey we'll all celebrate you coming up the Posting Rankings Chump
Catnapper

I hadn't noticed how many posts I'd done so thanks for pointing it out Chump

Madamhoney

Not sure I'll get to see it after all, the reception upstairs isn't so great so I'll have to wait and see and I want to watch Smallville on Freeview and I can only tape off Freeview downstairs, so can't even tape Crouching Tiger too. Digital telly is such a flippin pain in the arse!!!
Lucifer_666

I'm with you Honey on Digital Telly ..... I don't think its anything its cracked up to be....I'm also still having trouble with certain channels at certain times breaking up and becoming unwatchable
Madamhoney

The only one I have trouble with is ftn, which is apparently going off air soon anyway - bah!!! I've loved being able to watch the X-Files again, really peed off about it.

It makes life far too complicated for my liking, I have to switch this button then that one programme the video, make sure I switch it back or it'll tape nothing, programme freeview blah blah. Too much hassle!!! I think it's a bloody disgrace we're being forced into having digital, dictators!!!
Catnapper

I still have probs with freeview cutting out for a few seconds every now and then........usually at important bits
roddglenn

Well Hellboy is a top film. Ron Pearlman I think was born to play the big red guy. John Hurt, Selma Blair and Rupert Evans all do a sterling supporting job. Del Toro's direction is first class as always and the effects and score all top notch too to give a polished finished film. Rasputin and the various Nazi characters all make suitably over the top villians and make for an entertaining story. As comic adaptions go Hellboy is up there amongst the best for me.

There is also a Hellboy 2 coming out next year which I shall look forward to.
Madamhoney

I get that too Cat, it's so annoying. They're just about to say something really important and then it cuts out and you're like, nooo!! What did he say?!
lord vader

didn't manage to see all of it , but it looked good
Lucifer_666

The film sounds good Rodd

I have serious trouble with my digital here....if you have a bad signal at all it degrades it seriously to were it becomes unwatchable...at least with analog you could still watch a degraded signal picture....I think people will eventually figure out what I'm saying but it will come too late
Catnapper

They're promoting the switchover to digital more and more now.......it comes into force in 2009........resistance is futile...
Lucifer_666

I think thats half the problem babe there is no real resistance against and I think there should be....people seem to only see the good but I think later the bad may over shadow the good after all what good is having a load of new channels if many a day you can't get any or a good few of them in???
Madamhoney

Thankfully I live in the last area to switch over. I think it's 2011 for us.
Lucifer_666

I think its 2012 for Ulster....our area well okay the closest UK area to me
Catnapper

I thought it was the same for everyone with it saying 2009 on the ad?

What happens if everyone has probs with digital......will we all have to switch back to analogue?!
Lucifer_666

There is no going back babe ....its the main thing that has me worried.... And yep when the signal is good and strong you get loads of new channels and perfect picture but its when you don't it becomes simply unwatchable unlike analog which was still very much a watchable picture....... I think people are being seriously fooled and it will be later down the line when its too late that people will be complaining
Catnapper

Then we can all look at you and say you were right .......by then it'll be too late though!

When I've had freeview on and go back to the normal channels sometimes the sound doesn't come on......so I've got to adjust it on the remote
Madamhoney

The other problem I get sometimes is the sound being out of sync, it's OK if you're watching something cause I just switch to another channel and back and it's fixed, but if I've taped something then the whole thing is unwatchable cause it's too annoying. Even if I pretend it's dubbed - LOL!
Lucifer_666

I wonder is your signal all coming in on the same lead there Honey or have you the sound coming in on another that there was a delay like that??? Just wondering??
Madamhoney

I have no idea - LOL! All I know is digital is crap!!
Lucifer_666

Well I won't disagree with that
Catnapper

Back to the reviews

Hellboy
The Nazis, aided by the mystical monk Rasputin, build a portal device off the coast of Scotland to summon creatures from another dimension to destroy Earth. The US send soldiers and Professor Bruttenholm, who's an expert in the paranormal, to try and stop the Nazis.

When the portal is opened by Rasputin, the Professor throws a grenade......it explodes, throwing Rasputin through the portal and a mysterious baby creature out of the portal. The soldiers want to kill it but the Professor adopts it.........the baby becomes Hellboy who grows up in his "father's" establishment where creatures with paranormal powers are treated as normal and who help humans fight against evil forces.

It's a good film with lots of action, great acting and spectacular special effects. Ron Perlman is perfect as Hellboy, though why Hellboy when he's a man? He has a great line in sarcastic comments......when he's fighting a creature called a Sammael a phone rings....he picks it up and says "It's for you" before smashing the creature with it I loved the scene too when Hellboy's on a rooftop getting advice from a kid about his lovelife!

Selma Blair plays Liz Sherman who Hellboy's in love with.......she's the original Firestarter The blue effects when she's firing up her powers are stunning and are some of the best sfx in the film. The love triangle between her, Hellboy and the young FBI agent, Myers, are funny and poignant too. Does she go for the "normal" man or Hellboy who knows what it's like to be considered a freak?

I thought the silent assassin was very cool with his whirling blades and strange mask.......but did anyone else think of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels cause of his name....Karl Ruprecht Kroesen?!

Good movie!
Lucifer_666

Great review babe I'm half way through watching it so I might be not adding mine till the weekend I'm afraid
Catnapper

I'd have added more......but I wanted to watch a tv prog at 8!
Lucifer_666

I have to say I really enjoyed Hellboy too.....Ron Pearlman doesn't normally have that leading man role or look in my opinion but in this I agree with Cat he suits the part perfectly....The film is filled with action sequences and I loved the whole Nazi linked background to the enemies particularly the 'wind up' sword assassin who as Cat said looked cool and yep I did think of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels too . I laughed at that scene with the phone aswell and the bit where Myers asks "will he be alright?" and Hellboy replies "yeah,..sure.....after all how big could it be?"and then gets suddenly grabbed and dragged out by this colossal creature lol. Also the scene where the head guy over Hellboy is giving out on the bridge that 'he's in charge and that nobody is going anywhere'...that is until half the bridge is taken out and the other two are killed....and it cuts back to the guy and he has his hand on Hellboy's chest scared out of his mind

The special effects were pretty good too and the creatures and characters seemed very real.....I also loved the fishy guy too by the way
John Hurt of course plays his part extremely well ....the guy just has one of those distinctive voices...you would know anywhere though his role was different from the kind of parts Hurt normally goes for... I
don't really associate him with the Mentor,..old, . Father role but he was very good. I also really liked Selma Blair aswell in this, she was actually quite fanciable and I'm not normally her biggest fan, perhaps it was her
character or Gothic look...I'm not sure As for Rupert Evans who plays Myers I have never really heard of him before but for some reason the guy looked familiar to me? He obviously didn't stand out to the creators either because the sequel now in production Hellboy 2 The Golden Army hasn't got him in it

The film kept things very like the comics which was really part of of its appeal and charm to me.....its fast paced, action packed and lots of fun with many wise cracks from Hellboy when he is dishing out punnishment or recieving it
By the way did anyone notice that Hellboy was Fireproof but when his horns get multiply hit under the train and become red hot he puts his hand up and reacts in pain as if he got burnt ...well I thought it was strange
Anyway good demonic creature fun
Catnapper

Your review was worth waiting for Luc I was reading a magazine yesterday where someone was asking how do you get to be a film reviewer and I thought of you cause you'd be perfect as one.

I thought Rupert Evans looked familiar too Luc! But I couldn't place him either......till I looked him up on imdb. He was in a series called Rockface that I used to watch.....so that's why I know him. It was about a mountain rescue team in Scotland and I liked it but it got cancelled after 2 series

I never picked up on Hellboy yelling in pain when he was supposed to be fireproof I get swept along by the story and don't notice things that others do.
Lucifer_666

Thanks for the compliment babe but I really don't think I'm all that good but I do appreciate the sentiment
