The Bone Collector.
This is an interesting premise for a film, one cop with disability so bad that his mind is one of the only things that works properly, another cop, who used to work in a department so scorned that no-one seems to take her seriously, but she has a knack for crime scenes. They come together in the middle of a spate of really nasty and clinical crimes that seem to be linked by the fact the killer keeps part of the victim’s bones.
In theory I liked this film, It was reasonably acted, well cast, well filmed and decently directed (by Phillip Noyce, who has made some cracking films, like the quiet American and dead calm) In reality, I wanted more from the film! I wanted to get to know these people better, I wanted Angelina to be less attractive (I’m crazy, I know) I wanted Denzel to actually stretch himself rather than put out another decent Cop thriller.
This is what Denzel does best, just a quick look at his resume shows a number of these films. Deja Vous, Inside man, The Manchurian Candidate, Man on fire, Training day, The siege, Fallen, Courage under fire, The pelican Breif. Denzel does Cop/Lawyer/Military man, to a tee. This is not his most convincing role. He kind of strolls through it, Which is pretty hard considering he doesn’t move for the whole movie. The only time I felt that he was stretching his character past the uber angelic was when he was ridiculing himself following a seizure.
I also think that there were too many characters, one of which (Rooker) was so clichéd that it was at times really obvious that he wasn’t going to make it to the final credits.
To sum up, I found the film to be a decent film, well made with an interesting story. Sadly it could have been a great film that took a step away from the comfort zone of normal crime thrillers, sadly for us it didn’t.

I really like stuff at the moment with forensics and old crime scenes and have been watching a few documentaries on it lately so it will come to no surprise that I thought this film was quite entertaining...of course you have to dismiss the obsurdity of a police department turning over a serial killer case to a guy who can barely move in a bed and practically turn his apartment into a hi-tech forensic command centre lol No matter how good at forensics or a criminologists he is....If you can get around this (like I did) its actually a good little flick.
Denzel Washington I felt give a very good performance however I do acknowledge what Chump is saying about wanting him to stretch out a little but then again why fix a good thing? His character was likeable while also quite obsessive which can be a hard mix to maintain.
Angelina Jolie also played her role extremely well and the scene where she won't cut the victim's hands off and heads home and cries in the corner really made me the want to go and put an arm around her....... ..kiss her.... . take off her top. ..I then spot
the vial of blood around her neck and quickly remove my fingers
Anyway back to the movie I really liked the premise and the plot as it unfolded particulaly where it all traces back to a book, though I have to say now as soon as I seen 'Leland Orser' I knew he was the bad guy He always seems to play the psychotic weird guy who appears normal at the beginning.....Anyone remember him as the psychotic hologram in a Star Trek Voyager episode?...All that said he gets these parts because he really is quite good at playing the nut and in this film he's a particulaly nasty one. Michael Rooker does a good turn too as the stupid Captain who is more in the way than a help..he's another actor that I feel has done this kind of role before in various programmes and shows ....so in a way I sort of felt I knew many of the characters without the Director having to develop them much at all. Phillip Noyce actually did a reasonable job on this picture and there was certain shots that
I really loved .....the one I noticed most was the 3d rotated views of the first crime scene....oh and I loved the Rat sequence.... Is it just me
too that always seems to note when I see an outlook of New York city pre-2001 in films?
Summing up I enjoyed this movie, yes it had its flaws most notably a kind of predictable ending but it also had a lot of really good moments too and the acting cannot be faulted....Denzel does what he does best albeit in a bed and Angelina looked amazing ....albeit not in a bed ........Entertaining,.. full of intrigue and tension building moments..... A film I could watch again and probably still enjoy

Great reviews Chump and Luc I can see I've got my work cut out trying to post a review anywhere near as good as yours!
When Andy picked The Bone Collector I thought it was going to be really gruesome and I'd have to force myself to watch it but the bodies are never shown close up, so even though you know they met gruesome deaths, you don't see the true extent and it's left to your imagination......which is a clever way of portraying them!
Having a quadraplegic as the lead character trying to solve the murders is a novel idea and makes a change from the usual gritty loner cop battling drink/drugs type of scenario......though if he was quadraplegic how come he could move one finger? But that's a minor quibble because I think Denzil Washington was very good in the role. He made you feel sorry for him, then root for him to find out who the murderer was!
Angelina Jolie was more than a match for DW's obsessive forensics expert and made for a feisty character as the cop overcoming her phobia of dead bodies after she'd discovered her father's body a few years before. The scene where DW told her to saw off the handcuffs off the dead woman's body had me cringing and ready to fast forward! So I could understand her reaction and sympathise with her! The part where DW wanted her to walk the crime scenes instead of the forensics team was a bit unbelievable though.......that could only happen in a book or film! Even though she had a talent for seeing evidence at crime scenes, I can't see a professionally trained forensics team letting her take over!
It was an enjoyable film and had me hooked.......even though I was convinced the overbearing Captain was the killer! I must admit I never sussed who the killer was till the end and I wondered how the film was going to end......it was exciting, full of tension and one I'd watch again
