The Mist

Finally got to see this. I have loved the original novella since first reading it as a kid (it was published in Stephen King's story collection The Skeleton Crew). It was a huge early inspiration for me.

The story is of a mist that descends upon a small town in Maine which holds unseen horrors.  A group of people are stranded in the local supermarket and as horrors are revealed and time goes on the group starts to segregate and deep rooted frictions arise.

This film adaption delivered on EVERY level. It is directed by Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile) stuck to the story in all the right places and delivered a brilliantly shocking ending that was at once completely different from the original story, but at the same time cleverly in keeping with it. Acting from EVERYONE was absolutely first class. In fact the only aspect that wasn't 100% perfect was the special effects, but they were still more than adequate (it was made on a pretty low budget).

There's also some brilliant touches that movie or Stephen King fans will notice (the main character is a movie poster artist and some of his posters can be seen at the start of the film.  One is of the John Carpenter classic The Thing and another is for The Dark Tower - a picture of the gunslinger and the rose. Brilliant!).

I can't say enough how good this film is and that is quite an achievement given how good the novella is.

Great stuff      I love King stuff anyway...was this shown like a mini series in the States?? You know like some of his other latest works like The Stand or Storm of the Century?

No this one is a proper film format like Shawshank

I hadn't even realised it was a Stephen King story! I've got to agree with Rod though......it's a brilliant film with an ending I never saw coming. I was convinced it would end in a certain way but it completely blindsided me.

I've liked the idea of the film ever since Luc posted about it a while back,  but I was wondering how they could sustain the tension with having a supermarket and the mist.......but they pull it off brilliantly   I had a small doubt when we got a glimpse of what was in the mist (the shutter scene).......the effects reminded me of a 50s sciFi B movie (which I like anyway!)......but the effects when we finally saw what was in the mist were outstanding I thought

The film had everything......drama, tension, horror, some truly heart rending moments.....and some small comedy moments too (the woman with the tin of peas for example   ) The acting was terrific......there were cheers when something happened to a certain character!

Excellent film, very atmospheric...and well worth seeing

Don't go out into the mist to get it though Luc

You should like it........I've seen [Rec] too and even though people rave about [Rec] and say it's the best horror film they've seen for a long time........The Mist is up there with it (I think so anyway!)

Oh great stuff      I'm really looking forward to it now with the good reviews I'm hearing here
