The Dark Knight- A ReviewI finally saw this today, and I'm so glad I did! It's a cracking film with twists and turns from start to finish. This time Bruce Wayne/Batman ( Christian Bale) has to fight against the psychotic criminal clown The Joker ( the late Heath Ledger) who isn't your typical villain- not interested in money or material gain, just loves causing anarchy in any way he can and doesn't care how he does it. Believe me, he's really creepy! He's introduced relatively early on and seems to get more depraved as he progresses. Batman and Lieutenant James Gordon ( Gary Oldman), Gotham City's chief of police, are working on a project to nail the mobsters who are blighting the city and eventually persuade the District Attourney Harvey Dent ( Aaron Eckhart) to join them in bringing law and order back to the streets.
The mob are understandably not happy, and meet to discuss how to deal with the problem. The Joker offers to help them kill Batman for half of their 'dirty money' which is being looked after by a crooked accountant, Lau. After initial reluctance, the Joker is hired by the crooks and an all-action chain of events is set in motion! Put simply it's a fantastic film, my film of this year so far. Well worth seeing if you like this sort of film, as director Christopher Nolan has really revitalised the franchise. I shan't spoil it for you as you won't thank me and I really don't want to ruin your enjoyment of this- enjoyment is pretty much guaranteed......

Great review bud I will be putting one up soon too...it sounds the business

It is, and I've read today that Johnny Depp will be offered the role of The Riddler in a possible sequel.

Classsssss!!!!! I hope that is true.....that would be a great casting and character for Depp to get his teeth into
Catnapper
If anyone can play The Riddler then Johnny Depp can....he'd be terrific!
I enjoyed the Dark Knight too.......Heath Ledger's Joker is seriously deranged and is surely the definitive Joker. Out of all the scenes I'd say the "why so serious" one, where he's saying how he got his "smile," is the creepiest scene of all....it's the way he keeps saying "why so serious?"
I'd single out Aaron Eckhart's performance too......
Emperor Morphetine
God yeah, that was seat of the pants stuff! Makes me question how the BBFC could give it a 12A considering some of the violence dished out by the Joker. And you're right, Aaron Eckhart's good too- particularly later in the film, I thought Dent was too much of a goody two shoes until it all changes for him- I won't say how so as not to spoil it for those who haven't seen the film yet, but he does change rather a lot....

Lucifer_666
Ahhh thats the joys and woes of reading the comics as a Kid as I knew all about Harvey Dent well before this film....
Johnny Depp would be great as Riddler...I'd love to see that come about.....but I guarantee there will be loads of names connected to the part before it finally goes into production

There's also a rumour that The Penguin will make a comeback at some point in the series, initially under his real name of Oswald Cobblepot. No word on who'll play him though- I think someone like Philip Seymour Hoffman would do a good job in the role.
Jipdog
Phillip Seymour Hoffman has been banded about as soon as The Dark Knight came out.
Lucifer_666
I would love to see Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin....I can understand why people are suggesting him ...he would be perfect I think
Emperor Morphetine
There's a rumour going around that he's been asked, and that the character would appear initially under his real name and as a small time gun running crook.
Lucifer_666
I wouldn't be surprised to hear that...he seems to want to introduce future villains in this way....perhaps Selena Kyle will turn up somewhere too
Emperor Morphetine
Hopefully if Mr Freeze makes a comeback Arnold Schwarzenegger is nowhere near the role! It seems that Christopher Nolan is slowly bringing back all the villains from previous Batman films, but I'd actually like to see some of the more obscure foes given a chance.

Christopher Nolan said an interview that if he were to bring in the Penguin, then he would only be referred to as the Penguin a couple of times during the film and would use his real name of Oswald Cobblepott. He did indeed say he would be a gunrunner or a gangster of some sort but he wouldn't be portrayed like the comics as it would not fit in with the tone of the film.
Lucifer_666
I hated Arnie as Freeze urrgghh
I do think you have a point about more obscure villains turning up but they could do that I think quite subtly more in the background as smaller villains.....
As for the Penguin I understand Nolans thinking on it but part of me hopes they keep some of the things that make Penguin great...for example I hope he still looks rather eccentric.... he smokes cigerattes with a holder... he carrys an umbrella which is really varied weapons..perhaps still walks funny..but still have him a ruthless killer and crimelord
......but I don't want him anyway like the DeVito's one

Or the Burgess Meredith one in the old tv shows either!
Lucifer_666
I liked the Burgess one but I do know what you mean babe ..it is a bit OTT for the new feel Batman films
Catnapper
The whole show was OTT
Emperor Morphetine
It was, I've watched a couple of repeats of it on BBC Four and the whole thing's camp as a row of tents!
Lucifer_666
Yeah okay I'm with you both however it did have its moments and who can forget those 'Holy' remarks by Robin?
Emperor Morphetine
And the naff comic style effects that came up when Batman or Robin hit someone of course!
Catnapper
POW........ZAP
I don't know how they kept straight faces filming that show!
Emperor Morphetine
No, I don't get how they did either. The Joker looked like some kind of demented mime artist, Catwoman was just the stereotypical 'femme fatale'...how was it ever popular?
Catnapper
It seems OTT to us now but it was probably seen as cutting edge viewing back then
Emperor Morphetine
I get the feeling it was meant to be a kids show but gained cult popularity, Adam West has got work out of it on comedy factor alone!
Lucifer_666
Yes it was the OTT but that was all part of its charm I thought.... I remember as a kid getting up really early in the morning and it used to be on telly and loving it...even as a kid though it was camp and comedy...was it ever considered seriously?
Emperor Morphetine
I doubt it, although BBC Four repeats it in the early evening some days which suggests its become a cult show.
Lucifer_666
Oh I think it is definitely a cult show now....its shown all around the world...its still very big in ...erm .. ..certain third world countries
Emperor Morphetine
Well, no accounting for taste is there? I sat and watched an episode last night ( it was a story involving Catwoman) and couldn't help laughing. Then I saw one with the Joker, and laughed harder! It's just such trashy TV, yet Adam West and company seem to take it so seriously. You just feel like begging them to stop as the hilarity creeps up on you....
Lucifer_666
I think they are great shows..I really do ...and its the fact that they take it so seriously themselves that makes it even better
How nobody used to cop on that Bruce and Dick were Bats and Robin is beyond me too....though at least its not as bad as Superman in that regard
Emperor Morphetine
Yeah, it struck me as odd that nobody ever cottoned on to Bruce Wayne's other identity in a lot of the spin-offs as a handful of people always work it out for themselves in the films don't they?
Lucifer_666
Yeah your right they always seem to discover it in the films don't they??
Emperor Morphetine
Well, yeah. Alfred knows in the TV series and films, but I think he's the only one ( possibly Commissioner Gordon does too but I'm not sure).
Lucifer_666
No ...Gordon doesn't know...its only really Alfred in the series...and in the comics for a long while butr they then intrduced the character of Lucius Fox (played by Morgan Freeman in the films) who also knows Wayne's alter ego....Cat woman does find out at a time too but the DC/Batman comics are very different to even Marvel because they already have the future of Batman worked out ,....he marries Selena Kyle (Cat Woman) has a daughter who becomes the Huntress and Batman comes out of retirement to save Gotham City one last time against a powerful villian and dies after he does so...
Comics can be so confusing though because they also made another Huntress deciding to alter the character and this one is no relation to Batman but is like a reformed violent vigilante who turns up in Batman comics
Emperor Morphetine
Yeah, I gave up on the comics after a while, they just got too confusing!
Lucifer_666
They get like that because they decide to revamp them for a younger audience which on many occasions means they bring the character back to the beginning and start again changing certain streams of history
Emperor Morphetine
I hate it when they do that, it just adds needless complicated strands to a plot!
Lucifer_666
Yep me too...because you then get kids today like my nephew who has little buddies that tell him Oh Spidey did this and Venom came from here and some of it is all new stuff when I remember reading the original stuff....Venom didn't come from no meteor he was found on an alien world by Spidey during Secret Wars!!!!! Arrrggghhhhh .... I think I need to take a chill pill
Emperor Morphetine
Your Spidey sense was tingling!
Lucifer_666
yeah
Emperor Morphetine
I see what you mean though, I've read so many 'origin' stories on different superheroes that it leaves me clueless, yet people persist in constantly reinventing characters.
Lucifer_666
Yep I know...sure even the new future Avengers film and all the other marvel hero films connnected to it have been linked by a re-invented character in Nick Fury who is now a black Sam L Jackson lookalike from a parrallel comic It gets confusing but in a way it does sort of suit the films
Emperor Morphetine
I understand that when adapting these things for the screen some changes may be necessary but there must be limits surely?
Lucifer_666
Yep I agree with you about limits but I do think the Avengers film and the films leading to it...does suit to have it this way as it would have been much more awkward to do it the way the normal comics had the Avengers form
Emperor Morphetine
Yeah, I guess.
Lucifer_666
(I'm shaking you by the shoulders)
"Sound more convinced!!!!!!"
Emperor Morphetine
I just hope another Batman film is made and that the Avengers one is good.
Jipdog
It is annoying how they chop and change comic mythologies around. Sometimes it does a favour. The Richard Donner Superman film took different aspects from different incarnations of Superman, and that film is a classic! Hell, when Superman first started he didn't even fly! That was brought in by the 1940's serials and then incorperated into the comics after that!
I agree with Luc, Venom for me will always be associated with the Secret Wars arc.
Lucifer_666
Me too Morphy... me too
Wouldn't it be amazing Jip if they did a Secret Wars film ....hey what am I saying I'd even take a cartoon series of it I could perhaps see a computer animation or something in the same way as Beowulf could be good
Emperor Morphetine
Could make for an awesome live action film.
Lucifer_666

It would be brill mate
