The Box

A small wooden box arrives on the doorstep of a troubled married couple, who open it and become instantly wealthy. Little do they realize that opening the box also kills someone they do not know ...
Cameron Diaz and Frank Langella will star in this $30 million horror film "The Box" and its directed by Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko and Southland Tales)

When I heard the plot of this lately it rang a bell with me immediately....for it wasn't that long ago that I had seen a very similar story....remember I got for Xmas last year a load of old 80's Twilight Zone boxsets well one of the stories is just like this .....so after looking it up further...both are based on the same short story called Button Button
In the Twilight Zone Episode it was a box with a button on top but I think the film will differ also in the TTZ the couple knew it would kill someone they didn't know in the film they are apparently kept in the dark....which I have to say I find a strange difference...Anyway sounds interesting
Madamhoney

So when they open the box, someone they don't know dies?
Oh well, what you don't know can't harm you!
Catnapper

If they're kept in the dark then how will they know someone they didn't know got killed.......or don't you know?!
Lucifer_666

Well I think the both of you are hitting the nail on the head on what I was referring to when I said it was a strange difference..... its a bit silly to give them a box that grants you wishes or riches but with a price of killing someone you don't know if the couple don't actually know it I think they must find out pretty early on

Richard Kelly has confirmed that production has wrapped on his third feature "The Box".

The story does differ to what I had already heard before and wrote on here..thank goodness because the idea they were not to know that it would kill someone else from the beginning was silly..this is the synopsis now.....

Diaz & Marsden play Norma and Arthur Lewis who are faced with a terrible dilemma when a mysterious glass box turns up at their door. If they press the button inside the box, they'll get enough money to save their ailing son, but in exchange, someone, somewhere in the world will die.

When the temptation to save their beloved son becomes too much to bear, Norma pushes the button. Immediately, a gunshot rings out somewhere nearby. Consumed with guilt.
Norma must do everything in her power to solve a murder she has knowingly caused.

Madamhoney

Still sounds pants - lol
Catnapper

I thought it would be some kind of supernatural type film but it sounds more of a murder mystery one now......a serial killer who gets his kicks forcing people to question their consciences perhaps?

It still sounds intriguing though!
Madamhoney

Exactly, I can't stand murder mysteries - yawn!! lol
Catnapper

I like murder mysteries!
Lucifer_666

Yep I have to agree with you both ...I thought it was going to be a supernatural ..almost horror film kind of feel to it and even though like you Cat I like murder mysteries...this was not what I thought this film would be like. ...though perhaps we are calling it too soon and maybe it will have the magical element still very much a factor?
Catnapper

If someone, somewhere in the world will die when they press the button.......how come she hears a gunshot nearby?! Talk about keeping it in the neighbourhood!

I'm curious to see how the film pans out and if it does have a sci fi/supernatural theme to it.
Lucifer_666

I know it sounds a bit of a reach alright ....and whose to say it wasn't just coincidence and some Ethopian child that died across the Oceans is really the death that should be on their conscience?  I think that may be the result at the end..she solves the murder to discover that it is not the death the box caused
Lucifer_666

i see the new trailer for this is out ....looks good

Catnapper

This is one film I can't wait to see     When I read about movies in development. there are usually some I get excited about seeing.......and this is one of them
Lucifer_666

yep it definitely looks good.....the box even looks the same as the one in the old Twilight Zone episode
Catnapper

Which TZ episode was it Luc so I can see if I've got that one?
Lucifer_666

its an episode in the first season of the 1980's Twilight Zone called "Button, Button"....the ending is different in the TZ version and i just read there  Basil Hoffman, the actor who plays the husband in the TZ episode will also appear in the movie
