Mike Newell ("Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire") will direct a new film version of John Masefield's classic 1930s children's novel "The Box of Delights" for Brilliant Films reports Variety.
The story follows a boy entrusted with a magic box that allows him to travel through time. Frank Cottrell Boyce ("Millions") is adapting the script.
Sarah Radclyffe, Courtney Pledger and Esther Douglas are attached to produce. Newell is currently completing post-production on "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time".
The property was previously adapted into a BBC TV series in 1984.
The old BBC version always reminds me of Xmas...i havent seen that version in years now..i must get it..i love the opening credits

P.S. I also heard this too....
The BBC plan to remake The Box of Delights and The Midnight Folk into a TV series for broadcast around Christmas 2010..
whether this is still the plan is anyone's guess

Excellent...it's one of my favourite progs of all time Just hearing the music takes me back! In fact, I might watch some of it tonight  Roll on Christmas 2010
I wonder why they've altered the title though.....to distinguish it from the original prog maybe?

I thought you meant it was going to be called The Box of Delights and The Midnight Folk Luc....till I reread your post and realised you meant the series the BBC will be making! Though, will it be a series incorporating both novels......or 2 series?

i'm not sure...i'd imagine it would all go down as the Box of Delights simply because i think that title is more known but maybe not ...i didn't even know that The Midnight Folk was a story set before the box of delights...i hope it comes about now ...with all the cutbacks and recession ...t has to be a doubt now

I'd never heard of The Midnight Folk either! If it all goes ahead, I hope they still keep the magic and atmosphere of the original....and the music too

I don't think it's set around Christmas....it's about sea farers, treasure and a coven of witches from what I can tell!

hmm sounds like it could be good too perhaps it will be released a while before xmas and so if done together the box of delights parts will be around xmas ...hope so
