Stats, Prats and blaming the Fats

A new ressearch on all the news services today from Sir Derek Wanless
states that
BBC Article wrote:
The NHS will be at risk unless more is done to combat obesity and increase productivity, a landmark report says.

This is exactly what I get annoyed about ...this Wanless guy 5 years ago advised the Government to put in more money into the NHS for improving it now after those five years things haven't improved and immediately to deflect this the finger is pointed at Obesity like there is no other problems out there.... How easy it is to just blame the fat for every issue concerning the NHS even though there is no solid proof to support it.....as said before these researches and studies use all costs collected by illnesses any way remotely linked to obesity and assign it as all obesity costs...its a sham!! Does he mention alcohol abuse? No..... Increasing violence between young people at weekends costing the NHS too? No!...... Does he even mention other eating disorders increasing every day? No!!
He keeps to the fat because they know they are the easy target.......the people nobody will stand up for and so the efficent scapegoat. I also believe as amazing as this may sound the NHS could be facing increasing costs because people are generally living longer and utilising it more....but I don't see many targeting the old!! or saying if the obese really do live shorter lives they may actually save us and the NHS money

But this isn't the only stat or research lately that has disturbed me......Yesterday a study was saying that the Scottish smoking ban had led to a significant advance in reducing heart attacks by 17%.......but yet there is no reductions in those smoking?????
Now jesus they can't even prove lung cancer to passive smoking let alone heart attacks so as far as I can see they have discovered a reduction in heart attacks and are just putting it cheekily together with the smoking ban to make it look like it was beneficial?...... I really found this study ludicrous

I love the subject line of your topic Luc

So the obesity issue is cropping up again.....I can't see how obese people can be held solely responsible for draining money from the NHS. I think they're easy targets because people can see that they're obese whereas an alcoholic or drug user is harder to spot, so the obese person tends to get the flak.

It said in the paper the other day about how many millions of pounds are taken from the NHS by immigrants and health tourists who get the benefit of free healthcare without having paid anything into the system. Then you've got millions paid out in compensation for things such as MRSA caught while people are patients, then money wasted on things like modern art to brighten up hospital grounds and the list goes on.......no wonder the NHS is losing money.

I heard that item about Scottish smokers on the news yesterday......when they said heart attacks had gone down but there hadn't been a reduction in people giving up smoking....I thought I'd misheard! I had to laugh when they interviewed one ex-smoker though......he said he'd given up smoking cause he didn't want to wake up dead one day

Thanks babe I thought it was apt

I know what your saying about obese being easier to spot and I do think that is partially true but I firmly believe it is mainly the fact that they know people are automatically prejudiced against fat people... sure hell even fat people are prejudiced against fat people too and many hate themselves for being that way......thats how f*cked up this whole thing is....and all these crowds know this and abuse the situation...by using the overweight/obese as scapegoats.. Its very notable babe when you watch these reports on the news or anywhere... there is never anyone out there that even questions the theories or researchs...in fairness you get more doing so in America. Its also the way its reported.....they call it an epidemic and say its costs are spiralling.... I just don't buy it at all...

Of course your right too mentioning those other things babe ....they are a complete waste of resources..

You know thats exactly what happened with me too when I heard about the heart attacks and the no reduction of smokers But you see even that were they interview these people who have given up smoking or even those who suffered heart attacks... I really believe thats another way of trying to scare people.....they display people from the worst case scenario and declare it as fact that this will happen unless you do as the report says.... The funny part was about this particular study was that it was so ludicrous and crazy I was shocked those reporting it managed to keep straight faces

I was watching the news last night and I just couldn't get over it three items in a row that was reported were all statistically based
The first was about mobile phones and how a new study declares now that there is no health risks associated with using a mobile for up to ten years....however it may be after that time....
Next up we got the contraceptive pill and how a new study says that it can reduce the chances of women getting cancer.... however it also said the risks of cancer were greater in women who took the pill for longer than eight years.
Then finally we had some research about teaching drivers on how to drive more 'green' efficiently ....at this point I switched over
Is it just me that believes are culture is being brought along and dictated to by damned statistics
Catnapper

I don't bother listening when they come out with these statistics......how do they arrive at these findings anyway? They said before there's no evidence to say that mobile phones damage your health but now they say you're alright for 10 years but it might damage your health after that .......it makes you wonder what they'll be warning us about in 10 years time!

I think its 'creating work for the boys' kind of thing....I think alot of people and alot of certain companies are making a great deal of money from these researches and studies.. I also think science crowds and ressearchers are more likely to get funding or approval if they connect certain things to their research like climate change, obesity, etc

This morning the breakfast shows were reporting yet another research/study
Apparently only one in 40 11-year-olds meets the national target of an hour of physical exercise a day
A University of Bath study of 5,595 children found that 95% of boys and 99.6% of girls fell short of this time.

Its like an endless chasm of useless information which just seems to be around to help get control of people through unwarranted fear
Catnapper

It gets me when they base their figures on a tiny amount of people who might have answered a survey on a particular subject. That doesn't mean that their views are representative of the whole country and should be taken as law.

But having said that, I think the survey on the 11 year olds would be true........after all, some schools sold off their playing fields to developers so kids can't play there any longer to get exercise, then where schools do have playgrounds the schools are bound by all kinds of Health and Safety regulations......so you get kids who aren't allowed to run around in case they hurt someone, banning of playing certain things like conkers and snowball fights, some schools don't have a sports day now because it's unfair to children who aren't sporty Then kids aren't allowed to play outside at home because of traffic or parents fear they'll be abducted......so I can believe that particular survey would be true.

Honestly babe I think you can get any statistic to say what you want it to and I think thats exactly whats going on now at the moment
