Smoking

Right, I know not everybody likes smoking and I understand that, but I need to get this off my chest. As we all know, you canīt smoke in a pub, restaurant etc, but you can buy them in pretty much every shop you go in when you go shopping, same as in France. Fair enough. At the moment, me and my new wife are honeymooning in Majorca, and have come across the opposite. You can smoke in bars and restaurants, but you cannot buy tobacco in a supermarket or a bar. You have to go to a tobacconistīs to get some, which at times can be tricky as they close for 3 hours in the afternoon and all day Sunday. Couldnīt work that one out. Right, rant over!

probarbly becasue they are very relgious people bud , and probs do no work for that ampunt of time on sunday due to this fact .
Catnapper

Congratulations on your marriage JD   Hope you both have a long and happy married life together

I'd agree with Andy that it's something to do with religion and keeping Sundays sacred. It's only in the past few years that we've had Sunday shopping (even if the hours are reduced)........at one point shops would be closed all day Sunday in the UK.

As for not being able to buy cigarettes in a supermarket or bar, do you mean during the week or just on a Sunday? If it's during the week then it must be something to do with trying to get smoking banned, so you can only buy from a tobacconist, or giving small tobacconists shops a monopoly so they don't go out of business, or it could even be they never stocked cigarettes in supermarkets in the first place!

being honest i think all tobaco products should only be purchased from a tobbaconist ,
Scorpio

be good to yourself and quit

sound advice man .

Congratulations on your marriage Jip! As for the smoking, I think it's just because the Spanish have a different attitude to smoking, and the long closures must be down to their siestas or something. Hope you're having a good time out there mate- it's a beautiful country.
Lucifer_666

Congrats bud.. ..hope your having a great time out there

Scorpio and Sta... my friends I can't believe you both are advocating that Jip (and more than likely his wife) gives up smoking on their honeymoon....I know its mean't to be a holiday and time they will never forget but not because they are on the edge because they are in bad need of a drag off a cigerette    My God that would turn into a nightmare

As for the original issue...I get the feeling that small tobacconists shops may be the tradition out there and that was the way it always was ...it may have nothin to do with trying to reduce smoking within its population
big aundy

aye congrats jip ,

only looking out for there health luc, but if they didn't have a cig to puff on then there would be more time for between the sheets
Lucifer_666

Other things would be SMOKIN between the sheets eh
Jipdog

Thanks for the congrats guys.

Believe me, I would give up if I had a different job and lived in a different area where I didn't want to chain most people upside down from a lamp post for monkeys to swing on.

In regards to the actual selling of tobacco in shops, it's only been since the beginning of this holiday season. The last time I was over there 4 years ago most shops sold it, as over here. Still think it's strange that you can smoke in the bars and restaurants over there. Not that I'm complaining. We did find some tobaconists were open on a Sunday, so I'm not too sure it is to do with religion
Lucifer_666

That is very strange then?? Perhaps it is just a different policy or route to eventually ease out smoking...maybe they knew it would be unpopular particularly wth tourists if they banned smoking in bars and stuff so decided the shop curtailing was a better option
Catnapper

That could be right about it being unpopular with tourists Luc.....lots of pubs in the UK are closing down and customers staying away after smoking was banned.
Lucifer_666

Here in Ireland its crazy you pass a pub at any time of day and there is a group of people smoking at the door   I really fail to see the point of it...its just a new social scenario   I don't think it puts anyone off actually smoking
