Should governments block websites?

Should governments block websites?

The BBC are asking this question after Youtube went down yesterday for two hours and I had noticed it yesterday funny enough because I was only after putting up the embedded X Files 2 trailer here and it didn't seem to be working so I went to Youtube and it was completely down

BBC News has learnt that the nearly two hour blackout of the video-sharing website YouTube on Sunday was almost certainly connected to the Pakistan government's regulatory body Pakistan Telecom Authority. Should governments censor internet sites?

The owner of YouTube, Google, says the nearly two-hour outage of the website was caused by what it calls "erroneous internet protocols", sourced in Pakistan.

The Pakistani authorities ordered the Islamic republic's internet service providers to block the website because its content included Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

But in the process Pakistan Telecom "hijacked" the web server address of YouTube and the video web site was mistakenly blocked by internet service providers around the world.

There has been talk in the UK about  a limited blocking of certain sites but I think that would be a huge attack on our freedoms here    The Government and media are far too involved in controlling what we should do and think already ....I think this would be a massive mistake if we let this happen aswell

I only just heard about it on tonight's news......they were explaining how it happened but it didn't make sense to me! One thing though, if they can block a site so easily then why can't they block paedophile sites or terrorist sites? Those are 2 sites I wouldn't mind anyone blocking.

Because as soon as they do that babe a new paedophile site opens up elsewwhere besides by all accounts those are well hidden sites...they aren't well advertised as something like Youtube...these things I reckon are more private sites...

As for blocking sites I just think it sets the wrong precedence for the future
