Painting sold for $33.6m | BBC wrote: | A life-sized Lucian Freud painting of a sleeping, naked woman has set a new world record price for a work by a living artist.
The 1995 portrait, titled Benefits Supervisor Sleeping, sold for $33.6m (£17.2m) at Christie's in New York.
The previous record was held by Jeff Koons' Hanging Heart, which fetched $23.5m (£12.1m) last November.
The Freud work, sold at auction for the first time, shows Jobcentre supervisor Sue Tilley, now 51, asleep on a sofa.
Christie's described it as a "bold and imposing example of the stark power of Freud's realism".
Ms Tilley, nicknamed "Big Sue", was introduced to the painter, now 85, by the Australian performance artist Leigh Bowery.
She posed for Freud for four years in the early 1990s, and has said in the past of being his muse: "I think he probably picked me because he got value for money. He got a lot of flesh."
The previous auction record for a Freud painting was $19.3m (£9.9m), paid in November for his 1992 work IB and Her Husband. |
I'm delighted to see a painting of a large lady like this getting so much money in today's obsessed body image culture.....
I had to go home at lunch and I was watching the ITV news and they featured this story and said about her being known as Big Sue though I think they called her Fat Sue either way when she came on (through satellite) she immediately pulled them on it and said she took great offence out of being named that...its not a nickname of hers at all (obviously the media have just pinned this name on her) anyway the news duo had to apologise unreservedly for calling her this..... Fair dues to the woman thats what I thought

I can't say as it's something I'd like hanging on my wall but at least it shows women come in all shapes and sizes!
Yeah, didn't she nearly walk out cause she was called Fat Sue?

I don't know babe but I do think she shouldn't have to be named that.....the artist didn't call the painting or her that....its this media thing to label and make it like a joke because she is large....And I did think it was fair dues to her that she is not accepting it ...why should she??

I'd love to have seen Kate Garraway make a grovelling apology! I think she'd have been reprimanded if she was on the BBC cause they seem to take name calling more seriously there.

I thought she was the one who made the Fat Sue comment on ITV Luc?

I don't think it was her....it was another news reader I thought?? Either way it shouldn't be put on somebody like that by the media and really news services should be well and truly above that.....the news reader on ITV though did unreservedly apologise as soon as the one said it to her

You must have misread my post Luc......when I said Kate Garraway I actually meant Katy Derham
She said what appeared in the papers and probably didn't think about the woman being offended by her remark.......not that that's an excuse of course!

Oh MY MISTAKE THEN!!(looks around to see is anybody looking)
I don't believe its an excuse either ....its bad enough that we have tabloid newspapers doing and saying stuff like this without news services lowing themselves to this level .....in fact in my opinion News crowds should report the facts but many provide more now and ITV news in particular is one of the worst....they report using very emotive words and ways and almost feel to me like they are a visual tabloid now .....I just think News on telly should be different and straight forward ewith balanced views....not trying to sway people into a way of thinking.....
