One hand Lady Scary???Carrie Burnell was on BBC Breakfast this morning...she's a children's presenter that be's on CBeebies..I actually noticed her a few weeks ago with my nephew when we landed on that channel... she's just your normal kids presenter accept she has only one hand (she was born with one) and she doesn't wear a prostetic but apparently people have complained that she may scare the kids ...now is this just pure madness or what.... my nephew asked and I told him that some people are like that..she may had an accident or born that way....he thought nothing more of it...it didn't freak him out or scare...its so ridiculous what some people think these days and says more about the adults than the kids if you ask me

I've been reading about this....some adults have even complained to the BBC and there have been nasty comments left on message boards too (though lots of people have posted in favour of her). I can understand some kids might be scared of her appearance, some would be curious, while others would just accept it....but if some kids are scared, then it's a good opportunity for parents to explain and discuss how people are all different.

Thats exactly it babe...they should be taking that oportunity to explain how people are different to kids unfortunately some instead have encouraged children now to see it as wrong or weird and something to be switched off or removed

I'm sure if parents explained then kids would just accept it....most kids are curious and ask questions, that's how they get to learn things. I bet in most cases, the kids haven't even noticed about her arm and it's the parents who are over-reacting.

Unfortunately you'll get some parents who just won't see it like that and will continue to think they are right to complain in my opinion its no different than years ago saying kids are afraid of a black presenter

As a disabled person myself I've taken a keen interest in the Cerrie Burnell story, and I think that the whole thing's ludicrous- so what if she only has one arm, surely it has no bearing on her qualities as a children's TV presenter (which is surely what she should be judged on if anything)? After all there is such a thing as equal opportunities legislation and she's a good example of a successful disabled person which surely was the aim of passing such things.
And having read some of the comments from the concerned parents I can only conclude that these people are insensitive morons......they seem to have forgotten that these programmes are for their children, not themselves! If the child is scared that's fair enough, they're too young to understand, but I would think there are some who wouldn't care about it at all, it's all down to a child's personality. And having read some of the comments allegedly put forward by 'concerned' parents I'd say a percentage of them border on the downright personal and should be disregarded.
Also people forget she has a young child herself, so she must know something about dealing with tots. It's all opened up an interesting debate, and I am fully in support of Miss Burnell, good on her for making something of herself despite her difficulty.

Exactly Morphy...just because her arm is different, it doesn't affect her presenting a children's show or any other show. From what I've seen of her, she's enthusiastic, bubbly and makes for a good presenter. In fact, all the criticism has led to lots of publicity for her (she's been interviewed by American tv too)...so she could end up with a lucrative tv career!

I hope it does get her some good publicity because its all excellent stuff for the various accessibility debates that have gone on- I see it as a triumph over adversity that she made it thus far, and two fingers to all those who sniped that she only got the job to meet some kind of equality quota..maybe so but I would hope she was selected on grounds of her ability to do the job rather than pandying to some official guideline or other.

Well I don't know now... like i do think her hand puppet skills do suffer a bit here and apparently I hear she struggles with that well known kids favourite 'If your happy and you know it clap your hands'
All messing aside and being completely serious I find the whole thing kind of disappointing that we still have people who will complain about somebody with a disabilty or who is different...and I understand too the brightside ...it raises and hightlights the issue but still have we not moved on from this absolute pettiness??

I always thought that disability awareness was much better nowadays, I think its just the parents being old fashioned that has caused the whole thing......
Catnapper

Considering kids are more aware these days about discrimination, it's amazing to think some of their parents still have those kind of views. I wonder how those parents react to seeing disabled people in the streets...cover their kids eyes?
I read Carrie Burnell was supplied with a prosthetic hand when she was younger but she felt clumsy wearing it and that's why she doesn't have one now.
Emperor Morphetine
Its a perfectly good reason not to- I'd imagine prosthetic limbs are difficult for a time until you get used to them, and its good that she isn't seeking to hide her disability in any way now, I know from experience that if you try to fit in with everyone else you usually try too hard which only makes your problems worse, so there's no point hiding it as like it or not its a part of you!

I just find it rather disturbing that not just that people complained but the fact that they thought it okay to do so. like..how many people feel uncomfortable about black presenters? I'd say there is still a few... but then ask yourself how many would feel comfortable complaining about a black person on telly?? none!!! I just thought the disabled would have been afforded even more leeway than most others but this proves the opposite
Catnapper
You're right Luc, if anyone complained about a black presenter they'd be branded racist immediately....but complain about a disabled presenter and that seems to be ok for some strange reason
Emperor Morphetine
I can't understand it either- all forms of discrimination should be clamped down on, no question, yet still disabled people seem to have (through no fault of their own) being stigmatised by certain parts of society while other so called minority groups get rights of their own which prevent their suffering the same fate, its nuts.....
Lucifer_666
The only other thing like that I find is being overweight...people think its okay to discriminate and stigmatise there too.....its just wrong
Emperor Morphetine
Its wrong to when the obesity can't be helped for whatever reason but I do think those who get that way through plain overeating and lack of exercise deserve a certain amount of flak for letting themselves go to waste like that, it just seems foolish!
Lucifer_666
Yeah but what about those slim people who do very little exercise and also eat a hell of alot too?? What I'm getting at is weight gain is not as clean cut as eating too much and no exercise..it can be just a case of people being different..some people are much more susceptible to put on weight even though they may live a life that a slim person may consider grand
Emperor Morphetine
I suppose it is a question of individual circumstance, yeh, but still, I don't think those who got fat through their own gluttony deserve much sympathy.....
Lucifer_666
One man's gluttony is another man's low calarie diet bud its those slim people who never put on any weight at most maybe a stone at Xmas and lose quickly after just by normal eating again that really bug me
Emperor Morphetine
Its weird- I'm one of those people and even I'm still freaked out by it!
Catnapper
You lucky so and so Morphy
Lucifer_666
Yeah you lucky bugger...no.....you lucky SLIM bugger humppff. ...
It just goes to show everyone's different...all I have to do is smell some food and i will put on half a stone
Emperor Morphetine
I don't know how I do it, really don't......
Lucifer_666
HUMPFFFF only kidding..... people have just different metabolisms....f only society would realise that so that we wouldn't have to listen to presenters and media people who never have to truly worry about their weight saying its due to greed laziness or ignorance (i hate that last one the most urrggghhhh )
Catnapper
I wish they'd stop labelling people the same....we're all different and have different metabolisms, that's why someone can live off fizzy drinks, ready meals and sweet things, never do exercise, but still stay slim....while other people gain weight easily......lit's not fair!
