Newsagent refuses to serve non- English speaking migrants!I had to laugh when I read this  ...... A Sri Lankan born newsagent is refusing to serve them because he's fed up with them not learning English! He says "if you come to Britain, you have to speak English. Simple as that." It makes sense to learn the language of the country you choose to live in, it helps people communicate with each other for starters, but I wonder if he'll be called a racist?!

Well, he's right in that immigrants should learn the language of their intended destination and make every effort to integrate into the culture but I suspect that the new 'politically correct' brigade will label him a racist for not 'respecting other cultures' or some rubbish, really makes me mad!

It was described as a newsagents in the paper but on the news, it looked like a post office! Anyway, the reporter on the news said there hadn't been any complaints but if someone did complain, then it might be a racist matter and the Post Office are investigating it too. He could end up in bother, which is a shame because he's obviously proud to be a British citizen and wants other immigrants to be the same!

its a strange one this isn't it  i can see his point...... though i think he's going a little far by refusing to serve people and considering the post office trouble over there in the uk i thought he'd be happy to get anyone in there buying stamps....even if they speak gobblegook
Speaking of strange shop owners did anyone see in the news the small village shop owner that has decided to combat littering in the village by getting all the kids who buy crisp, sweets and stuff to sign them with a felt tip pen before leaving so they then have to put them into a bin the news thought it was a great idea but to me it seemed very controlling.....she's planning on doing it now with the adults next

It said in the article that the people he refused to serve came back with translators and he was happy to serve them then......so it looks like he wasn't banning them, but making a point. I can see the Post Office having a quiet word with him!
I saw that Luc and thought it was a strange idea but it seemed to work because the litter went down! She's in a village and knows everyone, so it wouldn't work in towns because people could write any name on the litter

at the end of the day we are the stupid country for letting them all in , you don't see this in oz or new zealand , or much of it in america,
because they don't get in if they don't obide bye the laws of the country . simple as that .

That's cause this government is stupid.......they have this rose tinted view of millions of immigrants coming here, all getting jobs, contributing to and integrating into society and everyone living in peace in harmony......they couldn't be more wrong! I know lots of immigrants work hard, have embraced our way of life (while keeping their own traditions) and are happy to be here, but, if you go off the media, a lot don't want to work, prefer to be on benefits have no intention of integrating and some even hate us! I see Australia are clamping down on immigration....that's something we have to look at doing eventually. We're only a tiny island and can't have unlimited immigration....our resources can't cope with so many people.
Back to the Sri Lankan newsagent/post office worker......according to yesterday's paper, he's been moved to another Post Office in a mainly white area......it was odds on something like that would happen!
I just spotted your post Morphy about the Polish worker in a Polish shop.......it almost sounds like a joke If it's true, I wonder if he's making a protest because of the Sri Lankan guy?! ...and will he get into trouble like the Sri Lankan?

look at it this way our way of life is now hampered , as anything we do is seen as being rasist but hey ho they can mosey on down and do what they like,
the other week they were protesting about our soldiers and they get police protection , if had done that we'd be in jail or told to move on .

True t....and that's what causes a lot of resentment when people see other cultures being treated differently. It's a democracy (supposedly), so everyone should be treated the same, regardless of race or religion.

Well, they should be treated the same provided they abide by our laws and integrate themselves into British society- but something must be done about people like those radicalist Muslims who protested against our soldiers- I'd say send them back where they came from no matter what they argue, zero tolerance should be the policy on them.

Well, I can accept that our boys are fighting for the freedom of ordinary Iraqis and Afghans but what I cannot stand is that all the hate preachers who are over here aren't being clamped down on for the most part, the country's too damn soft on them and I say they should be deported- I know some cite freedom of speech as justification but is it really acceptable that they can spew venom about our country in any case? I don't think it is, send the twits back where they came from regardless of what they might face after getting back to their country of origin.
But if people come over here and earn an honest living and get involved in our culture I have no problem with that at all.

Hear hear Morphy  If they hate us, our country and our way of life so much, then they shouldn't come here in the first place. They should be stripped of their British status and booted out of the country. We need migrants who respect our traditions and way of life....not ones who demand everything should change to suit their beliefs and opinions. But, having said that, I know the majority of migrants are probably decent folk who appreciate being here and it's a small minority who stir things up and grab the headlines.
Very true Luc! I thought the Post Office had moved the Sri Lankan, but now, it seems the Muslim owner of the shop in question had the guy removed, cause he said his Muslim customers had complained about him (I don't know if other customers complained too). I read too that the Lib Dems have sacked him as a councillor and I think he's been thrown out of the Lib Dems....and all because he spoke his mind

I can sort of see both sides to the argument......yes, you'd think people should learn the language of the country they settle in, but how many Brits speak French or Spanish when they settle in those countries?! I suppose it would help if everyone who goes to live in another country, has to take lessons to learn the language, the laws and culture...that way, people could integrate better and have a greater understanding of what's allowed, or not allowed, in each country.

You'd think that would be the obvious solution Morphy...it makes sense to know some of the language and understand the traditions, history and law of each country.....but I can't ever see it happening!

T for Prime Minister I can't see why the government don't kick out the immigrants who commit crimes or have terrorist views....they'd be deported from other countries, so we should do the same. But it's the hated Human Rights Act again .....they know they can cite that and be allowed to stay here.

The worrying thing is that the people who do complain are never celebrated as patriots but vilified for 'disrespect to other cultures'! Fair enough strive for multiculturalism but it should never get to a point where English is not the mother tongue in some parts of London and no doubt other areas too, it makes a mockery of all things British.

Funny now though how the English years ago spread their rule and the english language around the world to the point where its spoken in many other countries still but are adamant no other language should spread on their shores..is that fair I ask you??

All too true, we did indeed spread English to almost all corners of the world back in the days when we served as colonial rulers of a massive swathe of the globe, but although those days are gone it now seems that its Britain which is being invaded by others, so the shoe is now on the other foot in a strange quasi-reversal.......

Well English is the universal language now Luc I'm not saying that all immigrants should stop speaking their own language and only speak English, just that if they have a grasp of English, then it's easier for them to make themselves understood across all cultures...and in other countries too.
It's amazing how fast things are changing......the road leading into my local town used to have shops owned by white people, then more Indian or Pakistani owned shops appeared......now it's a mix of mainly Indian and Pakistani, with some white owned shops, 2 or 3 African shops.....and now a Polish one has set up! But at least everyone seems to get along because I haven't heard of any trouble there!
There has to come a time when we set a limit on immigration.....I can understand immigrants seeing Britain as a land of opportunity where they can be successful, but we can't keep on having people from all over the world descending on us and using all our resources......we can't support the world.

All messing aside I do agree with you all...well to a degree I agree that there should be limits on immigration particularly now...but you think the UK is bad you shopuld see here in Ireland....its been crazy here now for years

Yeah, they do need a work permit to take up jobs here I believe- but surely priority should be given to home grown applicants/employees?

They do need some kind of permit to work here I believe, but many work illegally, work for unscrupulous bosses who pay them a pittance, or work for bosses who give them cash in hand.
I knew there were immigrants in Ireland but I didn't think you had so many there Luc!

Since 1996 Cat over 457,000 have immigrated to Ireland, a country with a population of just over 4 million...... like its a hell of alot

That's a lot of immigrants for so small a country I read before how some use Ireland as a means of getting into the UK but it looks like they're settling in Ireland now instead! The government needs to get a grip and limit immigration.
I read too that the Sri Lankan guy who got forced out of his job and sacked from the Lib Dems is now a councillor for the UKIP!

We have an awful lot of immigrants and there was no foresight from our government at all because when we were booming in the celtic tiger it was okay but now there is going to be resentment and even racism...particularly if things get worse

That's the trouble Luc......with so many people losing jobs these days and so many people applying for each job that's advertised, there could be resentment at immigrants and a perception that they are taking jobs from British workers. Part of the trouble too is firms closing and moving businesses abroad, or closing British call centres and having Indian call centres instead. I know firms do it to save money....lower wages abroad......so it's up to the government to come up with ways to encourage businesses to stay in the UK (I don't know how though).
Yeah I'm sure the paper said it was the UKIP and you're right Luc, they want out of Europe. It said his mandate will be immigrants should integrate and speak English! He's obviously proud to be here and he's not afraid to speak out.....you've got to applaud his enthusiasm and patriotism..... but I can see him getting in more trouble!

Well i do agree that people should have to intergrate and perhaps have to take english classes but i do think this guy went a bit far by refusing non speaking people....i think he could have come up with a policy of those slowing up the queue due to lack of english have to step aside and wait for quieter periods....but this guy was looking to make a big point which is why he went so far
