News Fillers

I couldn't sleep through the night and at six this morning I wzs flicking between BBC and GMTV for their news hour....On the BBC a major study was reported that if a woman has just one drink it can increase her chance of getting cancer.....this was so major of a study that for some reason GMTV didn't feel the need to report it at all. ...then again they were busy reporting that other major study done today saying that a majority of adults who suspect child neglect are too afraid to report it...strangely though it wasn't a major enough study for the BBC to cover
It shows that it is true that these news crowds get a number of studies every day to choose from and to run with....  and you know to me thats fair enough BUT its the way its reported that disturbs me...honestly they make these things look absolutely major and breaking news and if you were only watching one of these shows you would genuinely get the impression that the study reported was much more important when in fact it is ...in reality its a filler..something to boost up the headlines ....because there was nothing else to report    crazy really

You'd think if something was a major study the news teams would take time and have a few minutes reporting on it......it seems stupid mentioning something in passing,  then saying nothing else about it!

If they want time fillers, they should pick funny or interesting stories from papers or the web!

They always used to have funnies to report..where's all the humour gone from television news?
Lucifer_666

I completely agree about news fillers being more comical stories taken from papers or the Web rather than throwing these shock effect stats or researches that they hand pick in the morning from a list...I just find it very decieving and almost media controlling in a way

Yes lets have more humour in our news

Well, the media to an extent is about controlling people- their viewing/reading habits and other lifestyle choices are shaped by television, radio, newspapers, the internet etc (can you tell I did Media Studies in college?) so people do need to know about the nastier facts of life as well as the more light hearted, but I do think sometimes they overegg the pudding when it comes to certain issues, and the funnier stories don't get as much publicity as they did thanks to this being the age of the health and safety obsessed!
Lucifer_666

Yep I can tell you studied the subject bud

And I agree that the media can be influential on many's opinions but I don't think it should be about conrolling people although I think there is many in the industry who think it should be and use it in that way..Max Clifford springs to mind...
At the moment I do think there is far  too much news equivalent to what you would read in a glossy mag reporting many minor issues with lots of emotional language rather than just reporting the facts on the serious issues of the day...An example of this is the whole Jade Goody saga
The University Challenge story is another joke in my mind..I just know that there is a group of media people who think they have done society a service by discovering a technicality ..when in reality they were all looking for dirt on this smart girl that practically won the game on her own and found out about one of her team mates not necessarily being a full time student at the time...now had there not been the big halabaloo about her nobody would have been any the wiser about this...don't get me wrong the media can serve a great purpose on getting to truths and making people answerable but it irritates me on cases like this because I know it was just media people just looking for dirt or anything that they can use

Again today GMTV was reporting on their news 'that kids who watch more telly are more likely to get asthma due to lack of exercise and obesity'      like you just have to laugh... because its basically another obesity scare... I'm just waiting for the stats that single out foods as dangerous next like ..'kids who eat ice cream are more likely to get asthma because they may get obese'      its just sooo ridiculous
Emperor Morphetine

Well, since the concept of the media as a whole was launched its all been about newspapers, TV stations etc trying to get one over on each other with stories, its a supply and demand medium which does on occasion lose sight of itself.
Lucifer_666

I think it has more times than not lost track of itself bud..well in my humble opinion it has
Emperor Morphetine

Well, the rise in new technology has really helped media institutions- the average person can now expect to be bombarded with content 24 hours a day and 365 days a year what with TV, newspapers, the internet etc all playing a massive role in society which in turn results in a pressing need for more content no matter how daft it may seem, hence the arguable dumbing down of what we see, hear and read on a daily basis.
