New President...new hope?I notice that Barack Obama will be sworn in as the new President of the United States this coming Tuesday. It's been built up in today's papers as the possible start of a new age for the country, and I must admit that in my opinion he seems to be talking a good game but ultimately of course he will be judged on what he can actually achieve during his time in office, and he must learn from the mistakes of outgoing President George Bush!
Admittedly he hasn't started encouragingly- some of his allies are apparently now wanted on corruption charges and the like, and I don't think his 'open letter' to his daughters which will be published in newspapers across America tomorrow is a particularly good idea as I had thought that he'd wanted his family and his politics to be two separate entities for the most part.
But most of what I've heard and read of him suggests that he wants to make a better country for all, and he certainly has a heavyweight Cabinet subject to Senate approval-
Secretary of State: Hillary Clinton
Defence Secretary: Robert Gates
Treasury Secretary: Timothy Geithner
Health Secretary: Tom Daschle
Attorney General (Justice Secretary): Eric Holder
Homeland Security Secretary: Janet Napolitano
UN ambassador: Susan Rice
Energy Secretary: Steven Chu
EPA Administrator (Environment Secretary): Lisa Jackson
Housing Secretary: Shaun Donovan
Education Secretary: Arne Duncan
Interior Secretary: Ken Salazar
Agriculture Secretary: Tom Vilsack
CIA Director: Leon Panetta
Apparently he's retracing Abraham Lincoln's journey as he travels by train from Philadelphia to Washington before being sworn in at the White House, and security arrangements are being finalised for Tuesday, with BBC One devoting two hours from 4pm that afternoon to covering his inauguration and first speech to his countrymen. Could be worth tuning in to see what he has to say........

He seems to know his own mind...he's already said about pulling troops out of the Middle East and he wants to close Guantanemo Bay (though I don't agree about the UK taking in some of the detainees ) so he's saying the right things to please Americans. Only time will tell if he'll make a good President or not but at least he isn't prone to gaffes like George Bush was!
He's quick witted and has a good sense of humour too....I liked how his daughter ran forward to the train and he told her to be careful and not slip, cause that would spoil the Inaugeration He's a family man but I agree with you Morphy about the open letter to his daughters....that sounds a bit too mushy!

Let's hope he lives up to all the expectations being placed on him and he's a good President who listens to the people....something I wish Gordon Brown would do!

i am unimpressed by him; he is a nice guy, but i felt that the American public was more eager to have a black president than a female president...................i watched a set of interviews (20-30) where average black folk were asked "why did you vote for Mr Obama".......the answer was simple and resounding "because he's black!!!!!"
A TERRIBLE AND PATHETIC ANSWER...........................my god how racist is that? - if a group of white folk had answered that they voted for Clinton because of his/her skin colour, LA would still be burning; BUT, i am sure many women voted for Hilary Clinton based on the pure fact that she was a woman - yes i am well aware that many people voted to keep out obama and hilary based on those very prejudices, but it was every single black person that was interviewed that said they voted for him due to his colour........................what is point in these elections when prejudism has come to such lengths.................?
he may be the right man for the job, but when a large proportion of your supporters vote with the eagerness of a family friend we will never know!!!

Funny I like him now but two years ago or so I would have been very much in Clinton's camp but I do feel she made some mistakes this past while for a start... on the whole voting of the Iraq war..in fairness to Obama he has always declared his disagreement with it...and then there was the really nasty campaigning against Obama nby her which came back and bit the Democrats in the ass when McCain's crowd started tossing it back up....it really was bad crap on Clinton's part trying to
make out he had connections with terrorists or is a muslim..like in another time it could have cost the Democrats the White House altogether.
Though to be honest it wasn't just these things that turned me towards Obama's camp I also felt he spoke with much more charisma and has the kind of presence that you associate with people like Kennedy or Martin Luther King and I do think after eight years of such a moronic President the world needs this .
Another element that has swayed me away from Clinton, ...and I know this may sound sexist.....She's Female!!!! No no I'm joking well partially because I would worry that because she was a woman she may have felt that she had to act the tough, almost aggressive President for the first few years just to sway American fears that a woman can fill the role of President..the pressure will be on Obama too I know but not to the same degree on this front and when all is said and done we need a US President that will talk to people..be diplomatic and fair not another one throwing their weight around

I think it's amusing how people keep saying he's the 1st black President when his mother was white, so technically, he's of mixed race! I know what you mean Scorp, it's annoying when people say they only voted for him because he's black, or they didn't want a woman to be President.......it should be about his policies and views on important matters.
He does have charisma and he seems to be a good orator....not like George Bush, who always said the wrong thing! But it'll be interesting to see how he settles into the job after the excitement has died down....and how he'll react to any crisis or threat.
Another good reason to like him......he's a Star Trek and Harry Potter fan and he used to collect Spider Man and Conan the Barbarian comics too! I liked the tongue in cheek speech he gave at a Memorial Dinner during the elections, when he said "Contrary to rumours you have heard, I was not born in a manger, I was actually born on Krypton and sent here by my father, Jor-El, to save the planet Earth."

Nice to see there are politicians with a sense of humour- hope Gordon Brown's taking notes....

Gordon Brown can be unintentionally funny at times, especially when he declared he'd "saved the world" during a speech in the House of Commons No wonder everyone laughed at him

Apparently Obama's cracked on and made today his first full day in office..how silly, after a party like his inauguration and all the free concerts for him he must have the hangover from hell!

I think it shows his determination or at least gives that impression of determination to the mass public to get things back right...in particular the economy
I didn't know he was a Potter and Trek fan babe or a comic fan either and yep i laughed at that Kyrpton joke aswell

I hope he had some headache tablets!
Yeah he's a big Star Trek fan by all accounts Luc......he even gave the Vulcan signal to Leonard Nimoy at a political event last year He liked Spider Man and Batman the most cause he thought Superman had too many powers, so it was easier for him to gain superhero status!
|
Emperor Morphetine
|
Wonder if he'll be given his own comic- 'Obamaman', or something?
|
Catnapper
|
Give it time Morphy He's already appeared in the Spiderman comic the other week!

i can understand that about Superman i was similar...Sups was just too powerful i thought...it was difficult to see any villain a real honest to god threat
He didn't did he? ...thats a laugh Is Spidey helping the new President?
I wonder what kind of powers Obamaman could have?
|
Catnapper
|
Look out for spider webs in the Oval Office What powers would he have?........he'd mesmerise his foes with fancy speeches
Did you see in today's paper how there's an Obama toy in Japan? It's a best seller apparently!

Emperor Morphetine

Emperor Morphetine

Wouldn't you if you were leader of a country and a superhero to boot though? I'd say he has plenty of reasons to dance right now!

Perhaps its a lucrative line of work for ex-Presidents.....

Somehow, I don't think he'll be on Strictly Come Dancing any time soon!
|
Emperor Morphetine
|
Shame- a dance off between Obama and his surviving predecessors would be quite entertaining!
|
Lucifer_666
|
Can you imagine Clinton...there would be loads of rumours of him with the female dancing partners and you just know one week his dancing prop would be a cigar
|
Emperor Morphetine

Oh, old Bill would have his wicked way with them alright...wonder if they'd invite Monica Lewinsky to take part with him?
