Mother with baby refused admission to see film at cinemaThe New Zealand Herald reports how a woman was turned away from seeing the R16 rated film The Reader because her 5 week old baby was underage. A staff member recommended she see the M-rated Terminator Salvation instead!
The manager said he had to follow the law or the theatre could be fined $35,000. The mother said "discretion and common sense" should have come into play, but the manager said "I have no more discretion here than a publican has with someone trying to get into a pub a day before they turn 18"
It's a curious dilemma!

Yeh, its an odd one- if the woman wanted to take her baby to the cinema surely she'd have been better off going to some kind of mother and baby club? But equally I guess it could have repercussions for the cinema itself given the political correctness culture and all that you get now.

stupid cow - how noisy would that have been for a child.......and how inconsiderate for other viewers if the baby started crying................

I can't say as I've ever seen a mother and baby at any films I've been to but you're right about noise levels Scorp.....that wouldn't be good for a baby I'd have thought.

I have to say I find it very strange that a woman would take a child so young to a cinema...the noise of any film in there would be deafening to a child...and the words she uses too ..."discretion and common sense" perhaps she should employ these herself

It's a wonder someone hasn't tried the same thing in a UK cinema to see if they could claim discrimination and get compensation!

you know your as likely to see someone brought up on a child abuse charge for bringing a child that young into a really loud cinema like that

I haven't heard what happened in NZ and if the mother took matters any further but you're right about the noise......surely it would harm a baby so young?

yeah a wee baby's ears shouldn't have to deal with that booming noise ...like i don't know what cinemas are like in the UK but here in Ireland you can't hear yourself think in a cinema particularly if there is explosions or loud sequences......

Maybe she was desperate to get out of the house; alone at home with no other adults to talk to or something; hormones running wild after childbirth make you do the stupidest things. Perhaps someone should have directed her to somewhere more suitable.

She was at the cinema with her mother and a friend, so you'd think they might have said it could hurt the baby's hearing. Or maybe her mother could have babysat while she went to the film with her friend?

Yes, in that case, I can't see why they would go with a baby to the cinema. I thought she was alone with the baby. There are mother and baby clubs at the Odeon near us, that would be better for them both.
