last three films watched.thanks Aundy.
Return of the king.LOTR.
Now for two years, every Christmas,I get out my….LOTR,
I have managed to watch the first two,but never got to watching the third, well I can now actually say,I have,(I did see all three at the cinema,)but I wanted to watch them again, because,I wanted to.
And boy what a film, four hours of pure entertainment, loved every bum numbing leg shifting, beer swilling peanut munching minute of it.
Lets hear it for the hobbit,I can`t wait.
10/10/10/10/10.
One night at McCools.
This is one of those unsung gems, that just comes along and smacks you in the mouth, and have to say brilliant little film,so easy to watch,Jon Goodman is good anyway, but Micheal Douglas is funny donning a great syrup as a bingo playing hired gun, with a sympathetic ear.
It tells the story from three different people, about a girl they met one night at McCools.
I won`t give too much away. But the ending is a cross between Tarrantino meets the village people.go see it,you`ll love,I know I did.I loved it so much I bought it next day on Ebay.
10/10.
Sideways
Again another little gem, about two friends, one getting married, the other his friend who wants to give his soon to be married friend a good send off.
Paul Giammatti,is a oenophile( wine lover),and his( friend, just wants to get laid basically.)
Theres,laughs,theres tears,theres sex,theres sadness,but I came away from this film with a smile on my face.like a 1961 Château Cheval Blanc.Fantastic.
10/10

Training day
Watched this the other night, boy what a ride.
One day in the life of a Narc, especially with Denzil Washington as your boss.
What can i say,blown away.
We have Ethan Hawke as a rookie becoming a narc, his first day on the job, with Washington as his boss.
I don`t know where to begin, and i don`t want to give anything away,But we have drug taking, beer drinking, fighting, shooting, and thats from the cops.
Watch this film if you havent already,it`s certainly a roller coaster ride,
right until the end.
10/10.

Great reviews YTTM
I have watched so many films over the last two weeks between the telly and dvds I got as pressies but the last three officially were.....
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
This was on again yesterday on ITV and yes I watched it again after watching it Christmas Day Its a great film though and always takes me back to when I was a kid....I love the whole build up at the beginning but it does get so much better when they go into the factory. Gene Wilder is truly magnificent in the part...
Its funny in my house you always expect to hear the same things when this film is on for example during the song 'Candyman Can' that the sweet shop owner sings to the kids and is throwing all his sweets to them while Charlie looks on sad in the window....well you'll hear..."Hey why doesn't Charlie go in and get himself some of those free sweets?" another one is when Agustice Bloop first comes into it you'll hear "Let me in... I'm starving!" in a German accent this is then repeated again when that line is finally said in the film...yes its like going to an interactive viewing of it in my house ...in fact all thats missing is that they don't dress up as characters from the film .
10/10
Tigerland
This was on last night.... and I have to say I thought it was some of the best acting I have seen from Colin Farrell which really doesn't say alot for his acting in later projects but I find his accent comes through alot more in his later roles but in this I don't think it is noticeable. Its basically an anti Vietnam film set in a boot camp thats training young lads before they are shipped out to the war. Farrell is the troublemaker/cool guy/wannabe desserter who many also hate including the staff sergeants but even they begrudgingly acknowledge his leadership potential. Tigerland was filmed in such a way that it appears like it was recorded on a color movie camera of the time (hand held) which is a nice touch....
Its one of those films that kept me watching till the end just to see what happens but for me is not next or near up there with the likes of Platoon or Full Metal Jacket
6/10
Meet the Parents
I got this as a pressie and I watched it the other night...I love the film both De Niro and Stiller are class... with some memorable scenes and dialogue throughout...I just love when
people say Focker particularly DeNiro and the last part is absolutely hilarious when DeNiro is watching the video back of Stiller talking about him and karate chopping ..

The village.
Watched this one over the weekend,it was a toss up between that or constatine.i went with the village,as it had no adverts and not continued after the news.
Started off pretty well, good strong cast,it had potential.I mean this was the guy that brought us sixth sense. So I waited for the twist in the end like all of his films.
How wrong I was,not about the twist, but about the choice of film.
But I had to keep going,it had the supernatural suspense,do not go into the woods,or the creature will get you,so it had the expectations not for me to turn over.
A few times I drifted off, with pint in hand,it`s amazing i`ve done that a few times and never spilt a drop.
Anyway theres a point in the film where someone had to venture into the woods to get help, great I thought here we go,some gore, some blood, some horror.
Yeah i`m still waiting, there was twist, and I did not see it coming as usual, but to me the film lost it`s way earlier for me to care anyway.I don`t think I would watch this film again,I had to go onto wikipedia just so I could get some sense of the film.
Dire avoid it,I wish I had watched constatine now, adverts and all.
3.5/10 and that’s for the twist,but that’s it

four brothers
bought this the other day , watched it on saturday ,
plot . After their adoptive mother is murdered during a grocery store hold-up, the Mercer brothers--hotheaded Bobby, hard-edged Angel, family man and businessman Jeremiah, and hard rocking Jack--reunite to take the matter of her death into their own hands. As they track down the killer, they quickly realize that their old ways of doing business have new consequences. Its not as predictable as you might think.
very good film ,

The Village
I actually didn't mind The Village YTTM of course its not next or near as good as The Sixth Sense or Unbreakable but I still thought it was okay....I wasn't convinced at all at the twist though I seen it coming half way through the film..... Did you notice Shyamalan in the movie by the way.....its near the end and its a reflection
I'd give it a 5/10 ....okay maybe I'm being generous but I do feel had Shyamalan released this film years from now and not immediately after doing films like The Sixth Sense we may have looked on it more favourably
Sin City
I watched this last night.....and I have to say I love the way its filmed... Sin City is like watching a real life comic book mixing dark and bright colours into a black and white template...the characters, the dialogue and the action all coming straight from an adult private eye book with a fantastic cast which includes Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Michael Clarke Duncan, Benicio Del Toro, Rosario Dawson, Elijah Wood
Oh and how could I forget Carla Gugino's great scene that aslone deserves the 10 points but also throw in there Alba in a skimpy cowboy outfit and whoa
A visually stunning 10/10

YoUtAlKiNgToOmE

I did notice him in the reflection, thing is i drank abit, and i nodded off a bit,i may have missed some really important parts of the film, but by then,i was gone on.

Lucifer_666
|
I really don't think you missed all that much mate I think what has made the film worse for you is that you had high expectations for it which is understandable considering his previous films and I do think I'm being slightly generous to Shyamalan with my review simply because of that.

The Others......
A woman lives in a large house with her 2 children while waiting for her husband to return from the war. The children are sensitive to light and their mother has to keep locking doors so they don't enter light filled rooms and she makes sure the curtains are shut during the day.
She advertises for staff and employs 3 people who show up one day saying they've worked in the house before. Meanwhile, strange events start happening.......the piano being played when no one's there, banging doors and the daughter saying she sees a boy....when no one else does....
It's a pretty scary film......I even jumped a few times and I never saw the twist coming at the end!
|
Lucifer_666
|
The Others
I really enjoyed this film too babe..I watched it again last night and its still very watchable...the children are brilliant in it particularly the young girl I thought. And your right there was some creepy moments in it...I really liked the bit were the old woman is playing on the floor resembling the daughter and the Mother attacks her.

Yeah that was spooky Luc
The locking/unlocking doors and closing/opening curtains were getting a bit annoying after a while but when all the scariness started happening I was saying "unlock the door, open the curtains"
|

I really like the bit where they go searching for the intruders in the house and open up all the curtains ...Another good bit is when the kids are in bed and the young girl is talking to Victor who keeops pulling over the curtain and you don't know if its her just being nasty to the brother
|

I thought the little boy was excellent in that scene Luc....I was feeling scared for him

I remember this film, very good as i remember,i was sober then.
But i also remember half way through,i paused it,because normally the wife and i,like to play detective(no nothing of a sexual nature, thats called private dxxx.)
No we just see if either of us have guessed the ending, and we both got it right.I know crazy 30 somethings or what. Our life is full of craziness.
But it was good film, very good acting, and some chilling moments.I always prefer ghost films, rather than slasher films.
|

Signs
Watched this last night.Brilliant film I really enjoyed this one,one of M Night Shyamalan better films,
I have watched this before, and my expectations were again set high, and I was disappointed first time round,so I wanted to watch it again, just to see if it was really as bad as when I first thought.
But no, not this time, the suspense leading up to the inevitable attack,is really worth the watch alone.
Two brothers played by Mel Gibson as a preacher who has lost his faith due to the death of his wife, hit by a truck driven by,looks like a cameo from the Shyamalan himself.
And also we have Joaquin Pheonix who plays Merril his brother, who has decided to live with his brother and two chidren ,and the boy played very well by One of the Macculkin brothers, and better than that home alone chappy.
Anyway we start with the family stumble across a crop circle in their corn field.(funny you don`t see them nowadays)
And then all things are starting happen to animals around the area.
One night a being happens to be on their roof, and it all starts from there.
The best parts are the scenes between the family themselves, rather than the alien bits.
The crop circles start to appear around the world. And Alien craft hover ahead, the anticipation of a inevitable attack awaits. One of the funniest parts,is that they obtain a book, about aliens, and they make make these cone hats out of tin foil,so they cannot get into there brains or something.
The build up and the acting in this are second to none. And that is what makes this film, you don`t want the ending to come, because we all no where it is going.it`s just the leading up to it is the best part.
A very suspensful 10/10

I was the same YTTM when I saw it the first time.......I thought it would be like a big War of the Worlds type movie with a full alien invasion storyline so I was disappointed it seemed fairly low key. But I watched it again and enjoyed it more!
|
Madamhoney
|
LOL Me too. I saw it at the pitcures and was very disappointed. It was very slow and obviously I didn't like the mention of religion. The only bit I liked was when they first saw an alien outside, was it at a kid's party? That bit was a little scary. I didn't like the end either, thought it was too weird.
However, I've watched it again since and quite enjoyed it! I do think Shyamalan's films have been steadily getting worse though.

Good review mate
I think all films I have watched after The Sixth Sense that have come from Shyamalan I have been initially disappointed with mainly due to expecting a great twist ending which I suppose he could never really deliver and for this I slightly feel sorry for the Director. But like yourselves once I rewatch the movies I enjoy them even more. I really liked Signs and likewise thought it was going to be a very different movie but thats not a bad thing in my eyes.
Oh and I reallly liked the alien at the party moment too

Mr. Deeds Goes to Town
I got to see this lately and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Gary Cooper is exellent as a man called Longfellow Deeds who lives in Mandrake Falls, Vermont and leads the small town kind of life which includes playing the tuba in the town band..... that is until he inherits a massive fortune and has to move to the big city where every big shark and Phony is out to get him including the media...only Deeds is not as naive as they all think and outwits them all by the end. Its a good film with real funny moments particularly with others reactions at what they consider strange behaviour from Deeds but I also really liked the moments of surprise when he catches them all out or is on to them and their tricks.
It ends in a great court case too....
8.5/10

Was it on TV Luc? It's years since I saw it.......in fact I can't even remember much about it even after reading your review I'd love to see it again though cause Gary Cooper's very believable in all his roles.
One thing though.........I always get this film and the James Stewart film (Mr somebody or other ) Goes to Washington mixed up!

It was on over Christmas Cat and I recorded it then ....It was handy to get at so I just decided to watch it... I have that many to watch now Oh I also watched A Series of Unfortunate Events lately too (it was on the same disc as Mr Deeds) ..... I must add a review of too
|
Madamhoney

I've only seen the Adam Sandler remake Mr Deeds which was good.
I went to the pictures to see A Series of Unfortunate Events and really liked it, I've read some of the books but got a bit bored of them to be honest. They just look nice. The best part of the film though is the end credits, I love that bit and could watch it over and over. The music is great and it just looks mesmerising. It really annoyed me at the pictures people started to get up and leave but it really was the best part I thought.
You'll see when you watch it.
|
Catnapper
|
Can't say as I've heard of The Score Andy.......is it an action/thriller kind of film?
I watched Hitchhikers Guide from the movies I taped at Christmas........not as bad as I'd heard. The narrative by Stephen Fry was fun, it had some parts where my mind wandered for a while but the film went up a few notches when Bill Nighy put in an appearance near the end in stunning (cgi but very effective) scenes of Earth.
I didn't see A Series of Luc cause Jim Carrey annoys me at times
|
Lucifer_666

Carrey usually annoys me too Cat but he really is quite good in this I will write out a proper review here for it soon when I get the chance.. and yes Honey I will be mentioning the end credits too they were very well done but generally I thought the whole film was.

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
I put this film on expecting something completely different I thought it was going to be a more cuddly,... bad guy bumbling,.. kids film but practically immediately I realised it wasn't and the narrator Lemony Snicket (Jude Law's voice) does warn you it ain't . Instead its almost gothic-like, dark and in a way tragic children's fable. Much like a Tim Burton film really I felt..visually beautiful and a great sound track!!
Three wealthy children's parents are killed in a fire. When they are sent to a distant relative, they find out that he is plotting to kill them and seize their fortune. The distant relative of course is Jim Carrey's character Count Olaf...now as I said before I am not the biggest Carrey fan but he really does pull off the part brilliantly perhaps it is the fact that I have very little fondness for him that made his development into hateful bad man so smooth or perhaps it was the exellent make up and direction..maybe it was both? Nevertheless Carrey works without question..and I really couldn't imagine someone else in the role now. Though he also plays the part with much humour too
I also understand what you mean at the end Honey..I watched the entire end credits too..they really were fantastic....they remind me of old time Russian type animation mixed with a Gothic style ...I keep thinking of an old ad that I can't place now ...
Anyway a real stunning experience
9.5/10
Check out the end credits.....
|
Catnapper
|
I bet when they show those credits on tv they either cut them short or they get reduced on one side of the screen while the presenter talks about another prog........annoying!!!
That ad you're thinking of Luc....was it for beer or lager cause I seem to remember some dark, gothic type ads a couple of years ago? Maybe one had a puppet type character?
I might actually look out for Lemony Snicket now after your great review!
|
Lucifer_666

Luckily enough babe they left the credits roll without talking
I would have been seriously peeved had they come on mouthing of about whats coming on later in the night
Yep Cat it was an old ad for drink alright and it had a woman's voivce narrating an old foreign rhyme throughout....arrrggghhh its killing me now
thanks....You should definitely check it out....its worth a look
|
Catnapper
|
You're very lucky then Luc cause they wouldn't have let the credits roll here without talking over them or something!
The ads I'm thinking of were a little bit creepy too from what I can remember of them........one had a silent film type feel to it and I think another one was like a fairy tale and both were in black and white. It's annoying cause I can't remember the name of the beer/lager.......or was it vodka even? that they were advertising
I'll look out for it at a bootfair this weekend I've seen it before and thought I'll not buy it cause Jim Carrey's in it

Mike Bassett: England Manager
I sat down the other night, put the telly on in the background while I worked on the PC. Mike Bassett England Manager was just starting on Ch 4 so I said I'd leave it on as I had never seen it before ...well it was a great move...I thought it was hilarious...of course before you read further I must first relate.... I like English football I have some knowledge of it even and to appreciate this mockumentary film to its full I think you do need that aswell.
With that said however if its your bag you'll love it...Ricky Tomlinson takes the lead role as a successful Norwich Manager who gets the England job almost by default as others just simply don't want it...and who could blame them? or the head honchos at the FA board don't want them like the most successful Premiership manager whose Scottishness is a problem (a definite reference to Ferguson there ) and the second best a branded loudmouth ex captain of England who wants the job but won't be considered (which could be referencing Brian Clough who was constantly passed over) So we follow Basset 'documentary style' through all the trials and hardships of qualifying rounds and the final World Cup tournament in Brazil where I think much of the humour lies in the fact that you know there is an air of realism to it all albeit exaggerated tenfold . There is also a cast that is like a whose who of not only British talent but of world football aswell? Amanda Redman plays his hard done by wife, Bradley Walsh plays his second (assistant coach) Philip Jackson, Phill Jupitus as a peeved off reporter, Dean Lennox Kelly, Martin Bashir does interviews throughout , Robbie Gee, Nigel Lindsay,.... as themselves Pele, Ronaldo, Gabby Logan, Barry Venison, Sue Barker, Dickie Bird, Keith Allen, and Atomic Kitten
One of my favourite moments is when Bassett loses his rag at half time 'Alex Ferguson style' in the dressing room every second word is bleeped out due to him swearing.....its just class!!
I also loved the Pele interview with Bashir asking him what teams have a chance of winning the cup...and he goes through all the top teams (England is avoided) Bashir at the end of the movie pushes him by asking what about other teams? Pele responds with other teams like Japan.....but Bashir insists "But what about England?" Pele looks almost surprised or bemused its been even suggested as he replies "England?" and then in a sublime moment he just laughs
Another funny moment is when the team is been heckled and badgered by fans as they are getting back unto their bus... Basset is last to go on and he turns back angrily and says "Oh yeah you all think your ever so smart but instead of name calling why don't you come up with something constructive and I'd listen" To this he gets a detailed response from loads of the heckling fans about exactly what he should be doing with the team in reference to formation and change of personel.....leaving him almost dumbfounded until he finally tells them all to Fcuk off
Oh and I really liked the whole team formation talk with the media which even in reality surprises me how much the media play on this subject....and its really only the English fan that could get any kind of pride out of a formation its even harder to understand when it is the most common used formation going ...the 4-4-2
There is so many different funny moments though...they do come thick and fast
8 /10

Day Watch - Further surreal horror from the USSR with Anton, this time searching for some mysterious chalk of fate said to have special powers and could help stop an oncoming conflict between the Light and Dark which could have catastrophic effects on the world. Not as good as Night Watch, it spends too much time showing off the latest special effects at the expense of the characters and the story. 6/10.
The Elephant Man - Watched this for the first time in over fifteen years and it still stands up as one of Lynch's best films. His trademark industrial settings and black and white photography that he tilised so well on Eraserhead, are given more focus as the tale of the unfortunate John Merrick, whose deformity was caused by an accident his mother suffered early in hgr pregnancy when she was attacked by a wild elephant. The performances are all first rate and the mood conjures up Victorian England so well you can smell the squalor in the dimly lit streets. 10/10
Planet Terror - Second viewing and still disappointed in the film, that promised so much. It's maverick direction becomes wearisome as it lurches from one set piece to another. Given Rodriguez's previous works this is a real let down, only saved by Rose McGowan impassioned role as Cherry Darling. 5/10

Borat:well i have finally watched this cringe inducing docu film, not sure i liked it though,I give him one thing though he`s got some Balls,i mean some of the things he does is well,i was biting my fist at some of the things he done.
Before he was going to sing his national anthem in the style of the stars and stripes,he gave a speech how his country were behind the war on terrorism, they loved it,and then just a little more, and a bit more, until it came to the anthem, the whole crowd were baying for his blood, then the horse went ape sh1t and the rider fell off,I was p1ss1ng myself.
But there was another bit where he was invited to a dinner party, and he called a hooker up as his guest after he was there for a while,i had to look away,i was in tears by now.
But some of it was so cringing, you got to watch it for the experience.
But to me not as good as what some people make it out to be,perhaps i need to watch it again.(but will not be for a while.)
6.5/10
Surfs up:Annimation film about penguin surfers, very good actually,if this rocks your boat,Jeff Bridges adds his vocalbury skills as Z a aging surfer, who was a good surfer, in his day.and the likes of cody the new wannabie, who z was his hero, the chicken is the best character as a doped up surfer, very funny, with a mix of adult humour to add to the pot(pardon the pun.Not bad.
7/10
backdraft:Bought this on Ebay a while ago,and not watched it on surround sound,so the weekend being as crap as it was.i got to catch up on a lot of films.Brilliant ron Howard film about a series of deliberate fires (arson)Sorry don`t why i put that.
Anyway yeah arson attacks on certain people and businesss, get the chicago FD really busy, but there are cutbacks to the fire dept,so resources are stretched, the on going bickering between two brothers, played by Kurt Russel and Adam Baldwin(i think).Does not help matters.
an all star cast of whos who in this one,Rob De niro,Donald sutherland,emmet T walsh,Jennifer jason Leigh,ooh i could go on,but i won`t.
The fires and the odd death worth a look.the acting scenes are good, liked this one and old favourite.

******POSSIBLE SPOILERS******* [although I've tried to be as vague as possible]
I watched 'Crash' yesterday. It was brilliant. Yes, it was manipulating your emotions at every turn and shouted 'I want to win an Oscar', but aren't all films?
Anyway, I can't remember the last time I watched a film which made me think about myself and how I live my life, what I say to people and how I say it. For a long time I've believed that actions speak louder than words and this film demonstrates this. The characters came out with such verbal crap, but they were all capable of incredible deeds. The cop [Dillon] and the carjacker particularly, even the younger cop [Phillipe] averted a tragedy.
I spent a lot of the film in tears, particularly the scenes when the store owner confronted the locksmith and when the cop saved the woman. I can quite see why Crash won the oscars rather than Brokeback Mountain. It is simply because it appeals to more people, including the Academy. I was annoyed when BM didn't win, I thought the Academy were being homophobic. But I think they were just being emotional.

Great reviews Sta and K Both films I have yet to see
You know I would consider myself to be a film fan but its only when you talk on a film forum that you realise there is so many films that have passed you by or have gotten past the radar..... I need to get watching more

That's why it's good being on a film forum cause you start watching films people recommend, or films you'd never consider watching before.
But I have seen Crash and The Brave One

I did intend though to watch both of those movies but for some reason something or another came up and they slipped under the carpet

It shows me how narrow my tastes are!! Cause I wouldn't watch either of those films - lol.

Really Honey?.... Why would you deprive yourself of certain types of films though? Then again I suppose its like me not wanting to see a girlie flick but I thought a woman with a grudge and vengence on her mind would appeal to you Honey...I don't know why but I did

We recorded Crash from the telly the other week and only got round to watching it last weekend. There isn't a DVD rental place near us and its difficult and expensive to get to the cinema, so the telly is the only way we can see films really. But we don't have time to watch many, so its good really.
I do recommend Crash though. It is very, very rare these days that a film makes any impression on me. I was put off it due to the hype, the A list cast and Oscar business, but it is actually worthy of all the praise. The A list actors are convincing, but the little known or unknown actors really give them a run for their money, in fact their scenes are better. I'm pretty sure some of the unknowns got awards for their acting, I hope so.
