Is George Clooney The New Jack Ryan?With George Clooney having moved his production company over to Sony Pictures, word now comes via The Daily Beast that the actor is trying to boost his box-office cred after recent flops such as "The Good German" and "Leatherheads".
To that affect, Kim Masters says he's expressed interest in playing Jack Ryan when and if Paramount attempts to revive the series based on Tom Clancy's novels.
The site also says "Clooney seems to recognize that at this time in the world and this time in his life (he's pushing 50), it's time for some commercial maintenance."
Paramount had a successful critical and commercial run in the early 1990's with Alec Baldwin as the character in "The Hunt for Red October" and Harrison Ford as Ryan in both "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger".
After some delays, the studio tried a 'reboot' of the franchise with "The Sum of All Fears" casting Ben Affleck as a younger incarnation of the character. Reviews weren't keen on Affleck though generally liked the film otherwise and it still proved modestly profitable.
Since then the franchise has been on hold with many wondering what direction any future installments would take - mainly would the character be older or younger, and will they use another novel in Clancy's series or use their own adventure. While the films were never huge moneymakers, they consistently pulled in profits for the studio.
Ryan Gosling's name was linked last year to the role, while former star Harrison Ford has expressed interest in returning.
I think Clooney could be good...then again I thought he;d be a great Batman too  though in fairness it wasn't really his fault it was just a bad movie

I like all the Jack Ryan films (I'll even excuse Sean Connery's dodgy Russian accent in The Hunt For Red October ), so I'm definitely looking forward to seeing another one....especially with George Clooney in it

i have never seen The Sum of All Fears with Affleck ....what was it like...i just can't see him in the role

He was a bit insipid compared to Harrison Ford.....I always think Ford was the best Jack Ryan, but it was a good film from what I remember. Apart from The Hunt For Red October, all the other films seem to merge together and I get them confused!

yep Ford is Jack Ryan to me too but i definitely feel Clooney could make the part his own too if done right
I just can't see Affleck as Ryan younger or not ....it reminds me of Winds of War and War and Rememberance when they replaced the guy from Airwolf with some other fella ..i just could never get used to him

Clooney would bring charm and humour to the role, but I can't see him running around and fighting like Harrison Ford did!

oh i don't know ..he might. .though he was never an actor for big action sequences was he? perhaps this will be a change for him
