Happy St Georges Day!I meant to post this much, much earlier today but illness, childcare, chores all took up all my time
Happy St Georges Day to all English and non English flickers!
Did anyone see anything on telly about our national day? There was the briefest of brief mentions of it on my local news, and I noticed that the BBC had changed their colour scheme to red and white, but that was it. Great. Where's the celebrations, festivals, carnivals etc. that other countries have when their national day rolls around?!?

Happy St Georges Day to you too K
They said on the news about 80 odd percent of people want today as a national holiday.....so it should be! I can't say as I've seen much happening in these parts in the way of celebrations though

Happy St George's Day to all! I shall be settling down with some good old English ale in celebration after I finish my work.

Happy belated St Georges Day to you too K ......I hope you had a good one and all you other English people out there

Are we allowed to mention St Georges day in this country, it may offend people....
Catnapper
Yeah it's stupid Red isn't it other countries celebrate their national days without any fuss so I can't see why England can't do the same. It should be a national holiday in England......and it's not as though St George was English....he was Turkish (I think) and other countries share the same saint.

And you know whats funny about it all too....I guarantee its not the foreign people that are complaining that it may offend others (or them) but other English people who have up their own asses a load of this pc crap that they think we all should be runnning around the same as them....it really is ridiculous!!
Catnapper
That's very true Luc .......maybe the English should say that the pc lot are discriminating against all the other nationalities who share St George.........they'd make St George's Day a national holiday in next to no time!
Lucifer_666
Yeah ..your right.....Its a wonder that it hasn't been made into a National Holiday there???
Catnapper
Well hopefully the pc lot will see sense one day and realise the only people who are offended are the English....cause we don't get to celebrate it When it's St Patrick's Day though....it's amazing how many people suddenly think they're Irish
Lucifer_666
Yeah I think thats why the Irish find it hard to understand why a patron saint's day would upset people?? It is just a reason to party and a day off I though that would transcend colour or religion? It does here on the green isle

Its all because many years ago the racist parties [the National Front/ British National Party] took over St Georges Day and the English flag, and started using them to mean 'all English people should be white, get rid of the foreigners'. So St Georges Day came to mean a racist day, and decent English people steered clear of it, not wanting to be seen as racist.
But the time has come to reclaim the day, use it to celebrate the best of being English, as other countries do when they have their national day.
For some reason it is a stigma to say you are English, but its okay to say you are Welsh/ Irish/ Scottish. What a shame.

"But the time has come to reclaim the day"
Rousing words K.....it reminded me of the St Crispin Day speech from Henry V

Too right it has- after all we have a lot to celebrate! We've given the world so many great authors, filmmakers, actors, actresses, three sports- football, cricket and rugby, top musicians and some of the best destinations in the world amongst other things.
So I'd say K is right- Perhaps we should launch a Filmflicking for England campaign!
Lucifer_666
Erm... yeah.... we just won't mention the slaves, the conquering of other countries, the years of freedom fighting to be rid of ya all, Tony Blair, the Iraq War Lets celebrate
But eh I'm all for launching FilmFlicking campaigns
Emperor Morphetine
Well, I don't condone any of the bad deeds done by ye olde England but I still think we should celebrate our country just like they do with St Patricks Day ( ie drinking, in particular good old English ale, and having a good time).
Lucifer_666
I'm with you mate.....
Its silly really England should have a National Saint's Day Holiday
Catnapper
Course we should!....It's against our Human Rights not to be able to celebrate it
Lucifer_666
Yeah lets get the world to boycott England with trade sanctions until it starts giving its citizens basic human rights
