Hancock- A ReviewI saw this this afternoon, and have to admit it was better than I was expecting it to be! Will Smith plays John Hancock, a superhero with a difference- he's a washed up alcoholic who does more harm than intended good. That is, until he meets Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), a PR man who is saved by our hero from almost certain death at the hands of a train. Together they work on improving Hancock's public image, and after a stint in prison ( for the damage he'd done previously) he begins to turn himself around, forming a friendship with Ray, his wife Mary (the lovely Charlize Theron) and their little boy as he rebuilds public trust in him and starts doing his job properly.
There are some laugh out loud comic moments ( Smith gets some brilliant one liners and physical comedy opportunities) and good action sequences (my highlight being Hancock's atempt to help the police deal with a hostage situation), and most of the performers put in a good few hours work. I shan't spoil the plot for you all, though I've given some basic details there are some twists that I feel I shouldn't tell you about! It's a nice twist on the usual 'superhero' film, and a good 92 minutes of entertainment, in fact it comes with a reccommendation from me .

I've seen it too It wasn't what I'd call a comedy film as such, even though Will Smith does have some great one liners and comedy moments........I loved the school bully scene
It's enjoyable, Will Smith's very good......and the twist is very clever!

Did you see the twist coming Cat? My mate and me thought there was something obvious but we didn't see a twist coming that way.
I agree it's not a typical comedy. If you saw the trailer then the film you see leaves you surprised. I was expecting it to be a lot lighter than it is, but I liked it more because it wasn't!

No, I didn't see the twist JD but I kept wondering what certain looks and expressions were supposed to mean!
I liked how it wasn't a comedy all the way through because that made it more "real" somehow.......but the comedy moments were very good

I seen this film over the weekend myself and enjoyed it aswell...it was different to what I expected though...with the twist and it did kind of bring the audience to a different place then where I wasn't expecting.
There was some funny moments....I liked the bully bit too, scenes where he is drunkily flying and exposing his ass to a load of kids though I think one of my favourite scenes was in the prison where he does exactly what he threatens to do to two of the prisoners...people who have seen the film will know what I'm on about .
It was a different role for Will Smith too I thought.....not the fact that he is a superhero but more to the point that he starts the film in a bad place...where he is a bum albeit a super bum while in most of his other films he usually plays the professional black person...intelligent, good job, etc.
By the way did you all know that this script, which was originally titled 'Tonight, He Comes', and floated around Hollywood for over a decade before been picked up ....Warner Bros passed on the chance and Sony stepped in instead...
And just on a final note I don't know if this has any relevence to anything but is the name and title 'Hancock' just two words 'Hand' and 'C ock' put together as in 'W*nker' which is basically what the character is at the beginning of the movie...I'm just thinking too much now aren't I??

A good theory but its wide of the ballpark mate, after doing some Googling I can tell you that John Hancock was one of the people who signed the American Declaration Of Independence.

Yes Luc, you're thinking too much.....but full marks for originality
Oh they have that expression in America too.....putting your John Hancock when signing something.....I'd forgot about that till Morphy mentioned it! I wonder if it's a reference to Will Smith's Indepenence Day movie too because films have lots of references and in jokes and he was a hero in that film too?
Glad you liked it Luc....the jail scene was funny....but excrutiating I bet

Oh..... well my idea still could be feasibly true
All messing aside I didn't realise that about the name Morphy..... though that saying Cat does sound familiar to me too..maybe it is a link to Independence Day?

I did read that it had been knocking around for a while. I also read that the original script would have been 18 rated with scenes like when he has sex with women, when he ejaculates, he would blow hole through the back of their heads etc. When Will Smith came on board, it was decided that they would tone it down so it would be a more family friendly fare, although I'm still not sure that this is suitable for the whole family.

That would have been a great scene....some poor woman getting her head blown off in a fit of ecstacy A super money shot if you will
