GI Joe- The Rise Of Cobra

Another day, another trip to the cinema- this time I saw ' GI Joe- The Rise Of Cobra'. Having seen the trailer I had half guessed that it would be a real no brainer of an action film, and conveniently I've been proved correct!

It's been getting real mixed reviews in the press and it's not hard to see why. Basically it revolves around the 'GI Joes'- a squad of elite soldiers with a mission- to retrieve stolen nanotechnology created by weapons expert James McCullum ( Christopher Ecclestone) while battling against foes The Baroness/Ana Lewis (Sienna Miller) and assassin Storm Shadow (Lee Byung- hun), as well as The Doctor/ 'Cobra Commander ( Joseph Gordon Levitt) and Zartan (Arnold Vosloo) under the command of General Hawk (Dennis Quaid), the Joes themselves being Conrad Hauser/Duke ( Channing Tatum), Wallace Weems/Ripcord (Marlon Wayans), Snake Eyes (Ray Park), Hershel Dalton/ Heavy Duty ( Adewale Akkinnuoye- Agbaje), Sergeant Stone (Brendan Fraser), Abel Shaz/ Breaker ( Said Taghmaoui) and the lovely Rachel Nicholls as Shana O'Hara/ Scarlett.

The plot really doesn't leave much room for any major surprises, and it all seems a bit cliched really- but if you're happy to switch your brain off for two hours and just enjoy it for what it is you could do worse for an afternoon's entertainment!

Rumour has it that at least two sequels are in the works, so there'll be plenty more of Ms Nicholls ( my personal highlight   )......
big aundy

yeah mate it looks a no bad action film .

for some reason i get the feeling its a bigger hit in the states and probably got more coverage there as the cartoon was much more popular there......... also anyone who used to collect or even remember the old action figures from here wouldn't know them as GI Joes but as 'Action Man' or 'Action Force' so unfortunately i'd say it went over many guys heads here in Europe
Emperor Morphetine

True- I had no idea there'd been GI Joe toys and comics before I saw the film, I'd only ever seen references to it on Family Guy- including this one- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Amu3mPyfH28

The trailer looks excellent but I'm not entirely convinced about Christopher Ecclestone being in the film
Emperor Morphetine

His Scotch accent just makes him sound like an angry drunk half the time!
Lucifer_666

its funny because i only recently realised that my old Action Man and Action Force figures were in fact GI Joes only given different names here in Europe ...i had heard of GI JOES years ago but thought they were a different make of figures similar to Action Force

 i love family guy

As for Ecclestone he does seem a strange choice
Jipdog

I didn't realise Brendan Fraser was in it. The biggest name in the cast and there hasn't been any mention of him in the media!
Emperor Morphetine

Indeed, they've really messed up the marketing haven't they?
Lucifer_666

yep looks that way...they should have released the movie under the name Action Force here in Europe or  Action Force: Project Gi Joe ....or something akin to that
Emperor Morphetine

Of course they wouldn't do that as Americanisation seems the order of the day....
Lucifer_666

yep i guess...but it would have made better business sense
Emperor Morphetine

Oh, I agree completely.
Lucifer_666

i just think it was lazy marketing here in Europe bud

...then again Europe is not that important to these guys in the states
Emperor Morphetine

No, so I found while I was out there a while back, I read a quote where somebody said you could perform a simple magic trick by watching telly or reading a newspaper anywhere in the States- watching your own country disappear- and it seems that marketing people have followed a similar tactic to the letter with this particular movie.....
Lucifer_666

yeah it does seem strange...then again they are Americans after all
Emperor Morphetine

Well, that's very true- they seem to have forgotten the world doesn't begin and end with them.
Lucifer_666

I don't think many Americans even realise that there are other countries out there
Emperor Morphetine

To be fair their country is massive....
Lucifer_666

I could see an American giving that excuse bud
Emperor Morphetine

It is though, when I was out there everywhere else in the States seemed so far away it was untrue.
