Beatles White Album Recovered

I got it free with Mojo magazine....not a mag  I usually buy but I wanted the album! Mojo picked some artists to cover the songs from The Beatles famous White Album........and even though the covers aren't as good as The Beatles, some are quite good efforts! The album's split into 2......the second half is with next month's mag.

A Girl Called Eddy cover's the John Lennon Julia and it's a lovely smokey voiced version.......she sounds like a female John Lennon! Liz Green sings Back in the U.S.S.R......it has blues touches and she gives the song a totally different slant, but it works!

The weirdest one is Virgin Passages singing While My Guitar Gently Weeps.......if I hadn't have recognised the words I wouldn't have known what song it was! It's a totally unique version (with no soaring George Harrison type guitar riffs) and they've made it into a totally different song

The Beatles White Album is miles better but it's fun to hear how other artists interpret the songs! The mag also has pages devoted to The Beatles and the White Album songs and it's an interesting read!

I do love the Beatles, and having discovered the White Album I like it a lot- it's one of their best works in my opinion.

Which songs do you like best Morphy? My faves are Helter Skelter, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Martha My Dear, Blackbird, Rocky Raccoon, Julia, Back in the U.S.S.R. and Dear Prudence.

I'd rate the White Album up there with Sgt Pepper as their best albums
Emperor Morphetine

I like 'Helter Skelter', 'Dear Prudence', 'Revolution', 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', 'Back In The USSR', 'Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey', 'Happiness Is A Warm Gun'......there are loads, it's a marathon album!

That album Cat sounds very good.

.its celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the White Album

It's amazing to think it's 40 years old but it still sounds brilliant!

I forgot to say about the covers version.....there's a Scots singer called Julie Powlis who sings Paul McCartney's Blackbird. Groups from Crosby, Stills and Nash through to the Grateful Dead have covered the song but it's the first time anyone's sung it in Gaelic! She reverts back to English halfway through, then sings the rest in Gaelic......it's a beautiful song anyway, but she makes it even more hauntingly beautiful!

You have to love it when an artist takes someone else's song yet puts their own stamp on it.

I must see can you download that album babe ....it sounds very good

Jaspor Carot has even covered it too    I actually can't find the clip...but he sings.....

"Blackbird singing in the dead of night"

and then all the lights go out

Though thats a Wings song isn't it?  why is it on the White Album Covers?
Catnapper

Like I said Luc......the Beatles album is miles better than the covers one but it's interesting hearing different interpretations of the songs! The second half of the album's out with next month's magazine and it's got Helter Skelter sung by.......Charles Manson       Unless there's a singer with the same name...I'm guessing it's the infamous Manson! He was obsessed with the song and saw different meanings to it apparently!

I didn't know about Jasper Carrott's version of Blackbird   The song you're probably thinking of by Wings Luc is called Bluebird......I've got The Wingspan album and it's listed on there!
Emperor Morphetine

I really do think 'The White Album' is up there as one of the best Beatles records ever, it's got so much variety and Paul McCartney and company seem to be at the peak of their powers over the two discs, some of the best stuff they ever wrote is on the album.
Catnapper

I second that! I love how the Beatles had rock type songs like Helter Skelter, which is a real belter of a song, whimsical songs like Rocky Raccoon and Martha My Dear, all combined with beautiful songs such as Blackbird, Mother Nature's Son and Julia......it's a classic album
Emperor Morphetine

I've been listening to the White Album a lot lately ( I've got 'Happiness Is A Warm Gun' on at the moment in fact) and even after several plays it never gets boring, which is surely testament to its quality. It's up there in my mental top ten lists of both Beatles albums and top albums in general- you just can't ignore how great they were and what an influence they've had on the music scene since.
Catnapper

Their songs are timeless and will never die out and that's why people all over the world still flock to Paul McCartney's shows. I'd say The Beatles were the most influential group of all time.
Emperor Morphetine

I'm not going to argue otherwise, they probably were. Lennon and Mc Cartney are probably the best songwriting partnership ever.
