Any tips?

Just wondering what you guys thought on this- I've got a bit of a sideline in music journalism ( I write for a student music website as well as a more general music one) and was wondering if there was any chance I could make a viable career of it after I graduate? I'd been thinking about it and had considered maybe sending CVs to the likes of the NME but I'm not sure whether its the right thing to do long- term, I love music but at the same time I'd obviously need a decent wage to live on, and I'm not sure whether I'd actually be taken on as a staff writer or merely freelance- I don't know the difference between the two, and is it a big one?

I'd say it's a pretty big gap Morphy. With a staff writer, I think you will get a steady income, because you will be employed by whatever newspaper or magazine. If your freelance, you will just be paid by article and you have the extra stress of trying to find somebody to buy it. There's also the danger that your article won't be brought by anyone.

I'd go along with what Jip said Morphy. If you're a staff writer, then it would be a regular job with a regular income and I should imagine you'd have a lot of opportunities within the job (meeting bands etc)   If you're freelance, then you'd have an irregular income (though I know some freelance writers do have lucrative careers once established) but I suppose an advantage would be you could submit articles to lots of different magazines or newspapers and have a wider scope for people to read your articles.

I think I might try and make an appointment with the careers adviser on campus and see what they say- whether or not they can shed any light on the matter I'm not sure but I'd rather not be left in limbo at this stage!

You could try sending out your CV like you said Morphy, just to see what response you get? Then if NME etc reply and say they don't need any music writers at the mo, you can look more into going freelance? But, you never know, you could get offered a job off the strength off your CV...and problem solved!

Well, indeed, and if it doesn't work out I could try getting work writing about one of my many other interests- I have experience of football journalism thanks to my work editing Plymouth Argyle's FansOnline page so I had also thought of applying to magazines like FourFourTwo and seeing where that gets me.

Good idea Morphy, then you can gain lots of experience, which makes your CV look even more impressive! You could also submit freelance articles to your local newspaper covering both music and sport too!

I've now been to that careers appointment and it was really helpful- I've now got some idea of where I can go from finishing my degree- I could either just try sending my CV places and getting work experience, do some kind of journalism training scheme or even take a Masters degree in the subject ( not my preferred option for funding reasons but providing I could resolve that I could give it a shot).....it's all made me feel a lot more confident in knowing what I want and what I have to aim for to get where I want to go.

You've got lots of options to choose from so good luck in whatever you decide to do!

Cheers!
