'The White Album'- 40th AnniversaryDid you all know it was 40 years ago today that the Beatles released their last album as a group? Radio 2 broadcast a documentary earlier tonight looking back at the recording process, talking to the recording engineers, music critics etc and examining old interviews with the group to look into its importance as a record- opinion's still divided over whether its a masterwork or self indulgent tosh ( I myself think its brilliant). A fitting tribute to a great album, although I was expecting something similar to what they did last year or thereabouts when 'Sgt Pepper' hit 40- Id've liked to hear modern artists taking on the tracks, there's enough material over the two sides of it to get a decent compilation!

It's amazing the album's 40 years old...it hasn't dated at all and the music still sounds as good! I think it's a brilliant album too and not self indulgent, though I know John Lennon wasn't too keen on Paul McCartney wanting to include "Why Don't We Do It In The Road" on the album!
Modern artists have covered the album....remember I said about Mojo giving away The White Album Recovered a few months ago?! Some of those tracks were very good but they were mainly by little known artists (Paul Weller was the only big name on it) and not well known artists like the ones who did the Sgt Pepper tribute album.

I expected the BBC to do something similar to what they did for Sgt Pepper's anniversary but obviously the White Album's not as culturally important to them, which is a real shame.

Yes, it would have been good to have a tv documentary about it with well known bands performing tracks from it too. Or the South Bank Show could have done a prog about it too.

Id've liked to see some modern artists taking on the songs, yeah!
