' Guitar Hero' vs the real thingI was reading in today's paper that a columnist was attacking the 'Guitar Hero' and 'Rock Band' video games, saying that if kids wanted to take up music they should be taking up real instruments and not just simulating the experience- as a guitar player myself I must say I agree with him on principle but I do think he was perhaps being a tad biased as he was from within the music industry itself!
After all there is an argument for saying that playing such games could be regarded as a practise session of sorts before upgrading to the real instrument when kids are older, plus I always thought the idea of being in a band and making music was to have fun with friends as well as actually putting the theory into being.....which you can obviously do both virtually and in reality these days.
But actually having played both games myself I actually found it a great deal more satisfying just noodling with my real guitar as the imitation guitar controllers are just too damn fiddly, plus with 'Rock Band' the 'instrument' controllers are really expensive and take an age to set up!

i'd be lying if i said i didn't want to play those guitar games...i must give them a go some time
As for that guy .....he's not looking at the big picture.... i think he forgets about the huge percentage of kids that used to play their tennis raquets in the mirror to some rock song and never actually took up an instrument either...... i see this as no different
