'Death Magnetic'- A ReviewI got hold of a copy of the new Metallica album yesterday and I must say I think it's a definite return to form! They've clearly gone back to their hard and fast thrash metal roots, and its made all the difference. Opening with 'That Was Just Your Life' which sounds as if it could have been comfortable on the earlier 'And Justice For All' or even 'The Black Album', and progressing through the likes of 'The Day That Never Comes' and 'All Nightmare Long' before coming to a hardcore end with 'My Apocalypse', this is a must have if you're a fan of James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich and company. New bass player Robert Trujillo fits into the mix seamlessly and Rick Rubin on production duties has brought the best out of them once again.

That sounds excellent Morphy I see it's number 1 in the albums chart too after a battle with Glasvegas!

Yeah, it is good- they're back to how they should sound on this album, they've clearly been inspired to go back to their early years in terms of how they do things- it reminded me of previous records of theirs like 'Ride The Lightning', 'Master Of Puppets' ( my personal favourite of theirs), 'And Justice For All' etc. I think they lost their way a bit on 'Load' and 'St Anger' in particular but all is now forgiven!

Have you been to any of their gigs? I can't remember if you've mentioned it or not before!

Spot on Morphy! It's a bloody excellent album! Got to admit, I did quite like Load, but my favorites are Master Of Puppets and the Black Album, and this slots perfectly in between.

I think that was Hetfield and Ulrich's intention, wasn't it? They just wanted to go back to how they used to sound after their experiments on St Anger failed. Did anyone see the story in today's Sun about the bloke who had a bet with his wife a few years ago that he wouldn't shave until Metallica released their next album? There's a brilliant picture of James Hetfield taking a razor to the guy's chin fuzz!

Yeah I saw those pics! I bet his wife's happier now!
Metallica have topped the US album charts and sold nearly 500,000 copies since last Friday.

I like some of their music but I don't have any of their albums..... I think I've got some Metallica tracks on Heavy Metal compilation type albums I've got....I'll have to check my cd collection!

Well album wise I would recommend 'Ride The Lightning', 'Master Of Puppets', 'And Justice For All', The Black Album' and the new one. 'Garage Inc' is also pretty good if you like hearing what influenced bands as it's a compilation of cover versions they've recorded down the years- they do songs by people like Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Queen and more obscure acts like Discharge, The Misfits and Diamond Head.
