I hadn't actually sat down and read a book from cover to cover in ages but I borrowed this from the local library and found it to be quite entertaining- it's the biography of late great 'I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue' chairman and jazz musician Humphrey Lyttleton, written by the man himself and all the funnier for it, taking in his Eton schooldays, National Service, work as a cartoonist with the Daily Mail then his big break in music and subsequent sideline in comedy. Clearly he led quite a colourful and amusing life, and it was quite interesting to read his tales of life in bands- first working with other bandleaders then eventually forming his own.

Admittedly I've never really come into contact with jazz music prior to reading this and I'm not sure it's for me but I may give it a try should I decide I need something new to listen to! But I did enjoy his various 'Clue' related anecdotes as I've been listening to that since my early teens, I just love the dry wit and complete silliness of it all, and it really as the antidote to panel games Radio 4 promotes it as........

What is it about the old jazz musicians/singers as they always seem to be colourful characters....like George Melly for instance! It sounds a good read

Yeh, maybe its something about playing such music that transforms them into these larger than life characters!
