UK's Channel 4 and Revolution Films are readying a $10 million trilogy of films revolving around the hunt for the notorious Yorkshire Ripper serial killer says Variety.

Based on three of the four books in British novelist David Peace's "Red Riding Quartet," the storylines cover police corruption and perversion of justice in the hunt for the Ripper from 1975 until his detection in 1981.

Peter Sutcliffe was eventually convicted of murdering thirteen women and is currently serving multiple life sentences. Plot elements from the fourth book '1977' will be integrated into the three films.

Julian Jarrold ("Becoming Jane"), James Marsh ("Man on Wire") and Anand Tucker ("And When Did You Last See Your Father?") will helm the three projects from screenplays by Tony Grisoni ("Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas").

Though being produced as a TV series, both a UK and international theatrical release are initially planned with casting presently under way.

Sounds good this

That's pretty topical.....Peter Sutcliffe's been in the news recently because he claims he's cured and wants to be released   I can see that being a good footnote at the end of the trilogy.

Looking at the pic of Sutcliffe I think Alfred Molina would be good in the role and would appeal to an international audience.

I didn't realise there was that much police corruption in this long running case

I never realised there was police corruption surrounding this case.....though I know a few police forces at that time did have some corrupt officers.

Was this the case where they had hoax calls from someone......Newcastle Jack I think he was called?

The hoax caller was called Wearside Jack. He led the police astray into the Newcastle area when the real Ripper was in Yorkshire. Because of this hoax, the Ripper was able to kill more women while the police were distracted. Wearside Jack was caught in the last couple of years due to more sophisticated police technology. I think they found out that WJ was either an ex policeman or someone else with a grudge against the police. A shame he didn't think of the welfare of the women in danger rather than putting one over on the police! Anyway, they got him in the end.

I have very vague memories of the hunt for the Ripper- the horrible atmosphere, my parents quickly switching the news off every so often. Was the Yorkshire Ripper the last serial killer in Britain? I can't think of any others since then who have managed to act like that and evade capture for so long
