After 26 years solving mathematical puzzles on hit TV show Countdown, Carol Vorderman has announced she is stepping down from her role.

Maths whizz Carol, who has been with the show since it first began in 1982, made her decision just days after the programme's host, Des O'Connor, said he was leaving.

"It was a difficult decision because she loves Countdown dearly and always has," said her manager, John Miles. "The contestants, viewers and crew are like family to her." While it is believed 47-year-old Carol had been struggling to agree a new contract for the show which made her a household name, it is thought she had not felt the same after the loss of her long-term co-host Richard Whiteley in 2005.

Both Carol and Des are expected to leave the programme in November. Impressionist Rory Bremner is currently favourite to step in as the new main presenter, while other runners include Welsh star Aled Jones and TV personality Gyles Brandreth.

Rory Bremner??? Really??? Would he do impressions just before the crucial countdown connundrum?

I do think Vorderman will be missed on the show though

I just read this there now....

Presenter Carol Vorderman felt forced to leave Channel 4 quiz show Countdown after she was told to take a 90% pay cut, her manager has claimed.
Agent John Miles said Vorderman had been told the show had survived the death of host Richard Whiteley in 2005, and could "easily survive without you".
Vorderman, 47, said she wanted "viewers and all the team to know the truth" about her departure from the series.
A Channel 4 spokeswoman said: "We never comment on presenters' salaries."
Vorderman announced on Friday she was leaving the show she has co-hosted since 1982.
Mr Miles said his client had offered to accept a pay cut of one-third, in line with a 33% budget cut being imposed on the show by ITV Productions, which makes Countdown for Channel 4.
But he said she felt she was left with no alternative but to leave after she was told to take or leave an offer of 10% of her current salary, and given 48 hours to decide.

I don't blame her for leaving after being told about the 90% pay drop   What a way to treat someone after 26 years service   I know the show's very popular.....I even had a phase of watching it   ......so I should imagine it'd continue with a new maths wiz and the viewers would still watch it.

Countdown could be dropped......the person who holds the rights to the format says he's disgusted with how she's been treated....and he might axe the show.

Apparently, Countdown producers want Myleene Klass for the show but she turned them down. They might advertise for maths wizards to contact the show because that's how they found Carol Vorderman in the first place.
