What a joke....this is exactly what I'm on about when I speak about apparent studies and collective opinion on certain things like alcohol consumption, obesity and general health...now we have a study that says that not only do vitamins not improve your health or life expectancy but they may actually do you harm?? Now the question I ask that seems nobody else is asking is.....Was there no studies or research done before on this before every Doctor in the Western World went around advising their patients to take them regularly??? And if there was why isn't there comparisons being made between the two now?...Why aren't we asking where did the earlier research go wrong?? I fear however that there was very little research done on this and instead like everything else today from obesity to the Man made climate change thing all conclusions are based on collective judgement rather than cold facts!!! Yes mark my words people in a few years time we are going to hear some very contradictory research and studies about things like I mentioned above ...I just hope that it is taken a bit more seriously and people realise that we are actually being fed a load of bull today so it doesn't happen in the future ....I fear I'm living in hope though

BBC wrote:
Vitamins 'may shorten your life'

Research has suggested vitamin supplements do not extend life and could even lead to a premature death.

A review of 67 studies found "no convincing evidence" that antioxidant supplements cut the risk of dying.

Scientists at Copenhagen University said vitamins A and E could interfere with the body's natural defences.

"Even more, beta-carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E seem to increase mortality," according to the review by the respected Cochrane Collaboration.

The research involved selecting various studies from 817 on beta-carotene, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium which the team felt were the most likely to fairly reflect the benefits of the supplements.

It has been thought that these supplements may be able to prevent damage to the body's tissues called "oxidative stress" by eliminating the molecules called "free radicals" which are said to cause it.

This damage has been implicated in several major diseases including cancer and heart disease.

The trials involved 233,000 people who were either sick or were healthy and taking supplements for disease prevention.

After various factors were taken into account and a further 20 studies excluded, the researchers linked vitamin A supplements to a 16% increased risk of dying, beta-carotene to a 7% increased risk and vitamin E to a 4% increased risk.

Vitamin C did not appear to have any effect one way or the other, and the team said more work was needed into this supplement - as well as into selenium.

In conclusion, "we found no evidence to support antioxidant supplements for primary or secondary prevention," they said.

It was unclear exactly why the supplements could have this effect, but the team speculated that they could interfere with how the body works: beta-carotene, for instance, is thought to change the way a body uses fats.

The Department of Health said people should try to get the vitamins they need from their diet, and avoid taking large doses of supplements - a market which is worth over £330m in the UK.

"There is a need to exercise caution in the use of high doses of purified supplements of vitamins, including antioxidant vitamins, and minerals," a spokesperson said.

"Their impact on long-term health may not have been fully established and they cannot be assumed to be without risk."

But the Health Supplements Information Service, which is funded by the association which represents those who sell supplements, said many people were simply not able to get everything they needed from their diet

I saw the article in today's paper but didn't have time to read it all........I thought the experts would be saying what they've said before about the risks of taking too many supplements, which I can understand them having concerns about. But they're actually saying taking vitamin supplements causes premature death???      I can't see that.........we're always being told to make sure we get the right amount of vitamins every day......so how can taking a daily supplement harm? I can understand if someone's taking handfuls of supplements every day because then it's possible there could be a risk of harm.

They'll be saying next they got it wrong about fruit and veg and we should cut back on them cause of all the vitamins and minerals they contain

It must be the fact that it is artificial that makes it unbeneficial or harmful babe because they say fruit and veg is okay...of course loads of Doctors particularly the media ones are now out trying to rubbish this new study...because a load of them are being paid or have some connection with the organisations that sell the vitamins....its huge business and this doesn't sit well with them...its the reason in my opinion why this research is only coming to light now.....like even if the vitamins are not harmful the fact that they are not beneficial in terms of health is damning in itself

How will it affect people like pregnant women who are advised to take supplements like iron and folic acid........or people who can't afford to buy lots of fruit and veg and take vitamins instead? I think they'd have to do a lot more research before coming out with sweeping statements like they already have.

Course, and you might not have thought of this Luc, it paves the way for Jamie Oliver to appear on tv again promoting the benefits of sticking to fresh fruit and veg.......I know you'd love to see more of Jamie

No I never thought of the Jamie Oliver angle

Funny I think the opposite babe I think we have been all taking vitamins for years on sweeping statements from these health organisations that they do us good but it is only new that actual research is being done and the studiews coming in that we can properly judge....now I'm not saying this research is absolutely correct but it does make you question what we were been  told unopposed before

I never know who to believe.......they tell us something's good for us one minute, then a few years later they say it's bad for us    It's better just sticking to fruit and veg cause some of those are supposed to have antioxidants in them and can help prevent cancer.........and don't use supplements!

Thats my very point babe the way things are now you just don't know what to believe because if its not one thing its another coming in saying the opposite to what we were told last time.....

But when it concerns vitamins and the heath crowds I'm very sceptical because I believe many are making alot of money from scaring people into using their products or schemes
