|
|
Despite the film not opening for another six weeks or so, Paramount Pictures is already preparing the first sequel for the upcoming reboot of its "Star Trek" franchise.
Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof have been hired to pen the screenplay and produce the sequel according to Variety. Timetable wise they're aiming to pen the script over the next few months and to deliver it to the studio by the end of the year which would ready the film for a Summer 2011 release.
Producer/director J.J. Abrams will definitely return as producer, but it is undetermined as yet as to whether he will direct the sequel as well. Abrams originally only intended to produce the first film but signed on to direct after reading Kurtzman and Orci's script.
What storylines will be involved? "Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month. With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We'll be ambitious about what we'll do" says Kurtzman.
The move is an ambitious but also risky one. The previous ten films of the 'Trek' film franchise havr never been big earners, especially overseas, which is why the previously films often were kept to a tight budget.
The reboot however costs decidedly more than any of the previous films and so will need to perform significantly better than usual in both domestic and overseas markets to make potentially costlier sequels viable.
Though the film has screened in-house for cast/crew and some studio personnel, the first major screening occurs next Tuesday at the Sydney Opera House world premiere. Official press reviews for the film however have been put under an embargo until late April so don't expect reaction until then.
Crikey Abrahms is really keeping this movie on a tight leash ain't he
As for the sequel plans

| It's bound to be a hit so I'm not surprised JJ already has the sequel in mind! I'm just wondering if all the actors are locked into the sequel? I'm thinking mainly of Simon Pegg and Anton Yelchin who already have successful movie careers...and also Zachary Quinto, who's bound to be offered more film roles on the strength of Heroes and the Star Trek film? |

I was a bit sceptical about Chris Pine playing Kirk (he looks nothing like him for starters!) but he looks terrific in the trailers and has that energy and defiance you'd imagine Kirk having as a young man.
Bill Shatner's one of a kind AlesiFan I couldn't believe his age...78 ...he's got a lust for life, that's for sure! I bet his chat show will be wild and wacky! |

Yep i agree Cat i was very cautious of Chris Pine too but he does look the business in all trailers..i can see me routing for him
and i do think you need to get viewers doing that...part of the problem with Star Wars prequels was i just couldn't route for the main characters in particular Anakin....i'm really looking forward to Trek now
Bill Shatner was also doing these web type interviews with his daughter which i thought were pretty good too..they are on youtube _________________

I saw the trailer again on Channel 5 tonight.......and the presenter said the cast are rumoured to be signed up to 2 more sequels
C5 also said about TOS, Next Gen, DS9, Voyager and the 10 ST films.......but never mentioned Enterprise I feel a strongly worded email coming on....
