I've just finished reading this, the prequel to the Lord Of The Rings series, and I have to say it was very enjoyable. Tolkien writes really well, although sometimes he does ramble on a bit about minor details. However it's a nice lead into the Fellowship Of The Ring and explains quite a lot of what comes up in that towards the end.
Bilbo Baggins is a reluctant hero but I think that adds something to the book, he goes against type for a hobbit and actually leaves his hill home, to help a band of dwarves recover treasure stolen from them by a dragon. It's got everyhing a good fantasy book should have- different races, battles etc.
And now I'll be curious to see how Guillermo Del Toro adapts it for the screen- I hope he learns from Peter Jackson. If you like fantasy, you'll like this. Now I intend to go on and read the rest of the series, I always wanted to, and I've seen the films.
